1.0 out of 5 stars Extremely hot. Dangerous product.
By Pagliano Servero on May 3, 2016
I copied ~15GB of big files to SanDisk 32GB model from a ThinkPad X1 Carbon. I noticed that the speed quickly dropped down to less than 10 MB/s, so I was disappointed because my USB 3.0 drives are consistently fast.

But as if the slow speed was not bad enough, I literally burned my fingers when I unplugged it. I did not receive a bad burn, but I can still feel the burn on the tips of my index finger 10 minutes later.

I am an adult male. I am not extra sensitive to hot temperatures. This device is a danger to both humans and to USB ports.

In their comments, SanDisk is lying about the max 95 F temp. I copied a 4GB file to the device, and measured the temp at 120 F - see attached pic. I assume it would go higher if I copied more data.

1.0 out of 5 stars It does not transfer data as fast as it is supposed too and burns you.
By Slick Nick on August 18, 2016
It does not transfer data as fast as it is supposed too and burns you. I was excited to use it for the first time, plugged it into the USB 3.0 and attempted to move 45gigs of data with a 40 MIN eta, yay! After five minutes the 30 min eta went to 6hrs and 45mins! the drive was slowing down... but why? I touched it and it burned me, so I busted out my thermal imaging camera to check and it was in excess of 130 degrees Fahrenheit, after it cooled down and started transferring slower. This is obviously a dangerous product as applied heat of 131 degrees Fahrenheit causes second-degree burns on exposed skin, how can they sell stuff like this?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great solution for car music
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 11, 2018
First of all I bought this to use in my car for music so I was not worried about other people comments saying it gets hot. But I did some tests and indeed it gets hot when writing files on it but nothing crazy I could still hold it in between my fingers no problem. Not getting hot when reading from it (played music for 1h and check after). It looks good in car as it is small so not sticking out of dashboard.

Came formatted in FAT32 so I reformatted to NTFS, but tested speeds first they are same and now I can put big files on it if needed.
Tested as well coping files up to 300MB and large files like 4GB and again speeds were similar. I have attached screenshot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great drive, great value, a bit warm...
Reviewed in Canada on May 2, 2017
At the time of purchase, this was the cheapest 128 GB flash drive I could find, but this is certainly no compromise - when you buy this, you're not cheaping out, you're getting a great product that just also happens to be the competitively priced. I'd challenge anyone to find a smaller drive! The capacity shows in Windows as 115 GB, which is a down a little from the expected 119, but it's certainly no fake drive. The speed is also good (CrystalDiskMark benchmark results attached). It does get quite hot though. Never dangerous like it will burn you or anything but warmer than most things you'll touch in a day (well, unless you drink coffee/tea I guess). This doesn't really bother me other than that it makes me wonder if this will seriously shorten the lifespan of the device.

1.0 out of 5 stars Ok for small files. Large performance hit from overheating moving big files
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 13, 2019
Purchased 18 August 2018 for £12.89

I purchased this USB flash drive as I needed a small one for my key ring.

As my computer only has up to USB 3.0 anyway, I didn't see the need to purchase any newer standards.

These tests are 11 months after purchasing. So not representative of a newer product, but more so of the product after you've had it for a while at least. Though it shouldn't make that much of a difference, there would be a problem if the product becomes much worse within the space of a year.

It claims "Read speeds of up to 150MB/s" and Write speeds "Write up to 15X faster than standard USB 2.0 drives (4MB/s)" 15*4 = 60MB/s, lets put that to the test with CrystalDiskMark & ATTO.

read & write speed % performance vs advertised

Results of CrystalDiskMark also in image.

Sequential Read (Q= 32,T= 1) : 144.832 MB/s = 144.832/150 = 96.55% performance.
Sequential Write (Q= 32,T= 1) : 48.080 MB/s = 48.080/60 = 80.13% performance.

Random Read 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 8.303 MB/s [ 2027.1 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 8,T= 8) : 0.786 MB/s [ 191.9 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 8.220 MB/s [ 2006.8 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 32,T= 1) : 0.748 MB/s [ 182.6 IOPS]
Random Read 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 6.343 MB/s [ 1548.6 IOPS]
Random Write 4KiB (Q= 1,T= 1) : 0.743 MB/s [ 181.4 IOPS]

Test : 1024 MiB [G: 12.9% (7.5/58.4 GiB)] (x3) [Interval=5 sec] = x3 1GB tests

* MB/s = 1,000,000 bytes/s [SATA/600 = 600,000,000 bytes/s]
* KB = 1000 bytes, KiB = 1024 bytes

The CrystalDiskMark write results were lower than actual speeds when I got when transferring a 1.2GB file.

Next I used ATTO Disk Benchmark. Results also in Images.
ATTO Test 1 Parameters: I/O size 512B - 64MB, File size 1GB, Queue depth 3.

Highest Write: 24.36 MB/s 24.36/60 = 40.60% performance.
Highest Read: 166.60 MB/s 166.60/150 = 111.07% performance.
Average Write (256KB-64MB): 22.41 MB/s (anomalous result) 22.41/60 = 37.35% performance.
Average Read (256KB-64MB): 161.45 MB/s 161.45/150 = 107.63% performance.

I moved the USB to a different port, as I thought it was rather close to a lot of heat, so temperature may have effected the ATTO write speed.

Halfway through testing with the different parameters and in a different port, I realised/remembered that it is perhaps ATTO itself that is creating the heat, as it is somewhat of a stress test. I.e. the USB got rather hot. And I believe started to thermally throttle.

ATTO Test 2 Parameters: I/O size 256KB - 64MB, file size 256MB, Queue depth 5.
Highest Write: 66.75 MB/s = 111.25% performance.
Highest Read: 161.01 MB/s = 107.34% performance.
Average Write Excluding overheating (256KB-64MB): 64.38 MB/s 64.38/60 = 107.30% performance.
Average Write Including overheating (256KB-64MB): 47.08 MB/s 47.08/60 = 78.47% performance.
Average Read (256KB-64MB): 158.45 MB/s 158.45/150 = 105.63% performance.

Transferring a 1.2GB video file to the USB had an average write speed of between 62 MB/s to 64 MB/s. I transferred the file a few more times, just to test whether it would slow down. And it heated up enough that the speed went to the similar 25 MB/s write speeds as during the ATTO tests, and went lower than 20 MB/s if I transferred the 1.2GB file 3 times in a row and spiked lower than 10 MB/s if I pushed it even harder.

So it wasn't just ATTO stressing it more than normal use. If you transfer 1GB+ worth of files, the flash drive starts to overheat (this is the case in my laptop anyway, the laptop may exacerbate this more than if it was plugged into a PC case, as the USB is closer to the laptop's own components that are fairly hot themselves).

TL:DR/Conclusion: It's fine if you're only going to be transferring small file sizes and unplugging almost as quickly as you plugged it in. It performs better than advertised when it is cool. However, as soon as it starts to heat up and you're transferring 3GB+ worth of files it's write performance plummets by as much as -90%.

Edit: I noticed another review stating that they thought perhaps the speeds going down to 20 MB/s was because the 1GB+ files were exceeding the flash drive's cache/buffer. So I have added another ATTO test that bypasses the Write Cache. And the results below, and in the additional images, shows the same results as my previous tests, which either means it's not cache related and is indeed thermal or it's something else I haven't thought of.

ATTO Test 3 Parameters: I/O size 256KB - 64MB, file size 256MB, Queue depth 5.
Highest Write: 65.51 MB/s = 109.18% performance.
Highest Read: 169.16 MB/s = 112.77% performance.
Average Write: (including overheating): 46.76 MB/s = 77.94% performance.
Average Write (excluding overheating): 60.8 MB/s = 101.33% performance.
Average Read: 166.20 MB/s = 110.80% performance.
Lowest Write: 25.88 MB/s = 43.13% performance.
Lowest Read: 163.17 MB/s = 108.78% performance.
