When I first got this drive I ran a test, backing up approx. 6GB of 1080p AVCHD video to multiple locations: this drive, a 1TB USB 3.0 external hard drive, and a cheap ADATA 32GB USB 3.0 flash drive. The files were being copied from an NVMe M.2 SSD, so there was no bottlenecking from that, and I had the USB-A side plugged into a USB 3.1 compatible port on my motherboard (and later repeated, using the USB-C side on a laptop, also with an M.2 ssd inside, getting the same performance). This drive spiked to around 90MBps write for a few seconds, then fell to a painfully slow average of 20Mbps. In the same test, the ADATA USB 3.0 flash drive wrote at a consistent ~50MBps, and the USB 3.0 external hard drive wrote at ~90Mbps. For small files this won't make much of a difference, but for anything over 500MB, prepare to extend your wait times significantly.
For this drive to write over two times slower than a cheap USB 3.0 flash drive is insane. The only time you get USB 3.1 speeds is reading, which it excels at, but to be able to read something from it in the first place, you first have to write onto it at incredibly slow speeds. This makes it a very niche drive, good only for writing short bursts of files, where you wouldn't need USB 3.1 speeds to begin with. If this were a low capacity drive that would make sense, but given this can go up to 128GB it will appeal to people who want to copy large files at USB 3.1 speeds like myself, and end up being a major disappointment when it takes 5+ minutes to copy a couple gigs of video.
The only scenario in which this makes sense is copying files from a smartphone, but at that point, the phone comes with a USB-C cable to charge it, which would work just as well if not faster to copy files from. Cannot recommend this for any reasonable scenario.
The entire drive itself is only 1.5 inches. With the Type A port extended, you're looking at 2 inches. With the Type-C port extended it's only 1.75 inches. This thing is tiny, but not "lose-it-in-a-day" tiny. It does have an option for a lanyard connection, however, no lanyard was included in the packaging.
I've owned several OTG drives and this one by far is the best in terms of functionality. Other OTG drives I've owned had the basic plastic sleeve that slid over the permanently extended port connection. Well, majority of those types tend to lose their "locking" mechanism so the plastic sleeves stay in place. This OTG drive has a small thumb slide (think of the old box cutter knifes where you slid pushed down slightly and slid the knife out or in). This is very similar, except it doesn't "ratchet" when extended or retracting the ports. But, it does have little notches that will lock the extended port in place pretty securely. It will also "lock" the ports within the drive casing when the thumb slide is moved to it's center position.
The design is very nice and "expensive" looking. I would definitely purchase this type of OTG again.
I contacted SanDisk for replacement under warranty. I had to jump through some hoop like taking pictures, sending copies of receipts and then then waiting a bit for them to send me a return authorization. I still haven't bothered to return it because: I don't have a padded envelope lying around, and low motivation because I expect that the design flaw will just result in me getting another one that will break. I will eventually send it back and they will eventually send a replacement, but in the meantime, I am buying another brand that I hope is more robust and a better design.
Other amazon vendors have bent over backwards to send a replacement an let me use their packaging to return the defective item....SanDisk, is apparently, too big to make it easy to return defective stuff. They would rather have you decide not to bother because it is too much trouble for a $55 item.
