I have quite a few butterflies in my backyard during the spring and summer. I plant my plants in containers on my deck instead of in the yard. I know that Penta's attract butterflies but what I didn't know was the extensive list of other flowers that attract them too. Then to include some surprising info about where and why butterflies like to rest, I had no idea. I'm now on a new quest.

We were just talking this morning outside about hummingbirds and what might attract them and now I have that information. What a great little book. This is one I refer back to from time to time.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a topic new garden enthusiasts or children will love. Written in a light hearted manner, Don makes the scientific facts fun to read for everyone except perhaps...an academic! The concepts are presented in a humorous fashion making you want to continue reading.

What do butterflies and hummingbirds like to eat? Well, you will need to read the book to find out but I was surprised at some of the things the beautiful butterfly prefers! There is also good news for those of us who may have the occasional 'brown' finger - it's great to hear I don't need to keep the perfect garden to attract butterflies into my life!

The use of images throughout the book, makes a topic such as this so much more enjoyable along with great tips on how to make your garden a hummingbird or butterfly magnet through use of color. I love red as well, so I understand the attraction for hummingbirds!

With a great list of flowers in the garden planning chapter to assist you with your goals, this is a great, fun read covering the basics to get you on the road to butterfly and hummingbird heaven.

This is a great book for any nature lover who appreciates the beauty of watching butterflies and hummingbirds. I always loved seeing them randomly, but never really thought about attracting them to my own backyard! This gave me some fantastic ideas of how I'll need to set my yard up so that I enjoy watching these beautiful creatures all the time right outside my window. Really cool book!

I love the idea of creating a sanctuary garden. Spending time in these gardens is a great way to reduce stress and forget about life's problems for awhile. It's probably great to lower your blood pressure too! This book is extremely well-written and includes many pictures. It offers many great ideas and concepts you can apply to your own garden to turn it into a sanctuary for butterflies and hummingbirds. These are strategies that anyone can do... no special skills required.

I love nature and I love gardens. Reading this book I've felt very inspired to improve my garden and make it more attractive for birds.
I've found tons of interesting data about butterflies and hummingbirds that I didn't know before. Like for example, butteflies can smell with their feet!
It's well written, it's interesting and inspiring.
I want to make a few changes in my garden now and see if I can attract more hummingbirds. I will follow Don's recommendations.

This book was way to basic - there was not a lot of information in this book to help me with my garden. If you want to learn about this subject, there are much better books out there. For instance, I live in California and I thought the "The California Wildlife Habitat Garden" book was both excellent and inspirational in comparison. I recommend that perspective buyers do more research to find the most useful book based on where they live.

Sanctuary Gardens is a delightful instruction book to start your "Hummingbird" and "Butterfly" garden - large or small. You will have fun with this book and everything is right on. I have 3 separate hummingbird gardens that I started small and enlarged every year with incredible results. The hummingbirds even enjoy the mexican sage bonnets and they are sustainable throughout the hot summers.

My butterflies love the silvardo sage, the lantana, the mexican sage and the hummingbird bushes. Sometimes during the day there are thousands of butterfies and it is awesome. My dogs finally stopped chasing them. I had to train them with treats to "stay"!

Please note: research the plants that are sustainable in your weather zone or you will spend money on plants that can't take the heat or the cold. Start small and grow.Your investment can be resonable and you can utilize items that you already have around the house or shop at a garage sale to keep expenses down. Have fun!

One key note: research your own area to determine which plants will sustain in your weather zone. Hummingbirds are territorial and fun to watch darting from plant to plant - garden to garden. They will even buzz into my large back porch to snif my houseplants while I am having a cup of tea. Absolutely fascinating!
