Sanctuary is a series that's a mix of scifi and monster movie with a dose of the X-files tossed in. In an universe that looks a lot like ours, but is populated with mermaids, lizard people and the occasional vampire, Amanda Tapping - of Stargate fame - plays Helen Magnus, a 160+ year old woman who's devoted her life to studying the world's 'oddities'. Sometimes protecting the monsters from the rest of the world, other times stopping said monsters from hurting others.

Magnus' team is comprised of Will Zimmerman, a psychologist and ex-FBI profiler, Kate Freelander, a bad girl gone good and Henry Foss, a werewolf who's also a technological genius.

Adding to the quirkiness of the show, Bigfoot is Helen's butler and she's, over the decades, rubbed elbows with an endless assortment of history's figures, including having once dated Jack the Ripper.

Season three is the first twenty episode season for the show and, to me, the show itself shows the stress. I found many episodes to be enjoyable, but others were decidedly not to my taste. I think it is very much a 'your mileage may vary' moment with some of them.
But even with the episodes I didn't like there were plenty that I did.

The set is a 6 disc set with the 6th disc being entirely made up of specials:
Visual effects Season 3
Amanda Tapping directs One Night
Hollow Earth
Damian Kindler: In the Director's Chair
The music of Sanctuary
Behind the Scenes, Normandy
Sanctuary for Kids
Character Profile, Nikola Tesla
Bloopers/Outtakes
Deleted Scenes

There are also audio commentaries on some of the episodes Kali III, Animus, Breach, Hollow Men, Metamorphosis, Normandy, and Out of the Blue.

I just received my DVD boxset of Sanctuary season 3 and I have to point out something before I even watch the first episode.

I know the show will be fabulous, it always is.

But the packaging is atrocious! It is a six disc set and the package literally has three slots for DVDs. The DVDs are stacked on one another. The first slot has discs 1 and 2 stacked together, the second has discs 3 and 4 stacked together, etc.

Plus, getting the discs out is very difficult. I'm fairly careful with my DVDs (and I realize that they are also very sturdy), but I was actually afraid of breaking one of the discs at one point while simply trying to get it out of the package.

I love the show but whoever thought this type of packaging was a good idea needs to rethink it (or let someone else design the package)!

Hence the rating...I had to knock off a star for the terrible packaging.

When the first copy of this 6-disc Bluray set arrived, I discovered there was a disc missing. However, after notifying Amazon, they quickly sent a replacement.
I am a Region B customer. This box set from E1 Entertainment has no information on the packaging as to Region coding. However, I have seen reviews indicating it is Region A locked. When playing a disc in my Region B player, the Region A only warning message appears. If you then press the "Top Menu" button on the remote, the disc loads and plays as normal.
I have now finished playing all 20 episodes on my Pioneer Region B only Blu-ray player. Picture and sound excellent.

While I recognize that $53.99 is expensive, people need to remember that this season has 20 episodes, not 13. Also, Amazon has a history of having a low discount and increasing the discount as we get closer to the release date. Just keep an eye on the price. I can't wait for this! While there were a few not-good-at-all eps this season, there were some stellar ones also that I really want to hear the commentary on. The buzz about the behind the scenes sounds awesome too!

Love the show but what IDI*T designed the case and decided to Stack the Discs on top of each other so they will get scratched over time.

Is it too hard to ask for a normal case that doesn't stack discs on top of each other?

This is for the Episode One Night.

This entire series just barely holds my interest. it has just the bare minimum of explanatory material to take it to a high school mentality level, for those in high school, instead of a 6th grade mentality. However, episodes like this one are lazy writing, inane, and intellectually annoying.

So, Will and his new girlfriend (Abby) are accosted by gang members in order to save their leader's life. The writers of the episode couldn't think of anything else, so they wrote in the leverage that if Will didn't save the gang leader, the second in command would kill both of them. Really?

So let me get this straight. The second in command, wanting the leader to be saved by Will, threatens to kill Will, if Will doesn't save the leader? I mean it looks like she doesn't have any leverage at all. Will could simply say he wants this or that (safe passage after the fact, for instance) or she might as well shoot the leader herself, since that's the logical outcome. (The second in command wanted Will to kill the leader by making it look like an accident, but she still had to make it look that way. Killing Will remains an illogical way to achieve that end., and so the evaluation I offer is valid.)

What's more, the gang will probably kill them anyway (Will and Abby deduce this). So, in fact, the second in command has no leverage at all.

In the mean time, Will concocts a plan whereby Abby gets free, and while free the first thing Will instructs her to do is call Sanctuary. Abby does get free, and runs back to Will. Her explanation is that she didn't want them to kill Will because she escaped. Again, if they kill Will, their leader dies.
