Book three in the Up on the Farm series
Finding love in the sanctuary of nature and another man' s arms.
Darrin Betancourt is a trauma surgeon in his early thirties living in New York City. His world gets thrown upside down after his husband dies in a car accident. Can Darrin get his act together and learn to love again before his life spirals out of control? His friends convince him to attend an all-gay retreat outside Woodstock. Begrudgingly, Darrin agrees to spend a weekend in nature, out of the city.
Jordan Floyd is a twenty-four-year-old farmhand who works for Devereux Farms Upstate just outside Woodstock. Jordan gets permission from his bosses to attend Camp Namast-Gay at the Woodstock Esoteric Sanctuary.
Darrin and Jordan end up in adjacent cabins. Can the two men take their friendship to a whole new level before the weekend is over? Or will disaster strike, derailing both of their lives and their burgeoning love?

The story focuses on Darrin, a Trauma Surgeon whose husband was one of the several victims who were plowed by a vehicle during a parade. Darrin was in the ED when his husband was brought in. Then later on, in lieu of his grief, he continued to work. It so happens that one incident in the surgery room trigged his grief and he froze. He was sent home and forced to take a leave of absence by his best friend who was his boss. During his leave, his best friend encouraged him to go with them to the Camp Namast - Gay, an event at the Woodstock Esoteric Sanctuary. He begrudgingly agreed and registered for the event. Since he was one of the late entry, he was placed in a cabin somewhere far from the events happening around the campground. There, he met Jordan, a farmhand from the Devereax Farms (the main site from the first two books) who was a late entry too so he was placed next door. That’s where I’m going to stop and have you pick up the book to read and find out what happens. It’s always awesome to read the books prior to this one but not necessary. It can be a standalone story.
Sanctuary for the Surgeon is a lovely and heartbreaking story about loss and moving forward.
The prologue was painful, but it set up the rest of the story nicely. It gave me a good sense of how much Darrin loved his husband and the immediate effect of his loss. I shed a few tears and set the book down for a while before continuing.
In subsequent chapters, I was with Darrin, understanding his continuing grief and wishing I could hug him close.
Jordan is a breath of fresh air after experiencing the pall over Darrin's life. His zest for life was exciting, and I immediately fell in love with him.
These two together, like pieces of a puzzle fitting together, were lovely to watch as they learned each other and got closer, both physically and emotionally.
The secondary characters supported the storyline and added humor, horny-ness, and color to the piece. There is some definite super-spice in here...between a lot of people. Shoot, I broke a sweat reading it!
In the end, I found their HEA to be believable and satisfying.
I look forward to more from this author.
*I have not read the other books in this series but do have plans to
Darrin has had a difficult past. He has lost too many, but the last one was his husband. He was at work as a doctor and was trying to reach his husband and Chase was not picking up. Suddenly Darrin realizes he can hear the ring tone somewhere nearby. He keeps calling it till he gets to a room in the hospital and as he reaches it the attendees are lifting a sheet over the body on the gurney... Now sometime later he is doing his job and helping a patient when time is critical and he looks down and sees a smart watch. The same smart watch he had given Chase his husband on his "last" birthday. He froze and puts the patient's life in jeopardy. Now his best friend steps in and forces Darrin to take some time off. However that is not exactly helping...
Jordan works at the farm and he is going to school. His boss and coworkers have a surprise for him that throws him for a loop. Another friend accidentally shared with his coworkers that he applied for another degree and not only did he get in but he will be getting a free ride from the farm. He will have to work three years after he graduates which he has no problems with. Now he had previously asked for the week off to go on vacation. He is headed to Camp Namast-Gay for a stay. Even though it is in his hometown he has never been. However once he gets there he finds an nemesis, from last year there. Someone who was a friend of his boss assaulted him but his boss got him out of there and promised Jordan he would never be at the farm again. Now Jordan finds he is right next to his cottage at the camp.
Of course Darrin ends up at the weeklong camp with his friends who believe he needs to clear his head. He also ends up at the far away cottages near Jordan and others. Darrin helps Jordan deal with his issue and the two start to hang out. But things get dicey at the camp. There are some weird injuries and even weirder classes the two take. But through it all they seem to be there for each other.
Will Jordan be able to help the doctor when he gets hurt? Will the two work together to help another camper in his desperate time? What happens when one gets something wrong and takes off? In the end can the two find real love again?
I really enjoyed this book but I would really never allow anyone I know to go to this camp... LOVED that the others from the first two books are in this one and looking forward to the next installment
