Purchase options and add-ons

First published in 1949 and praised in The New York Times Book Review as "a trenchant book, full of vigor and bite," A Sand County Almanac combines some of the finest nature writing since Thoreau with an outspoken and highly ethical regard for America's relationship to the land.

Written with an unparalleled understanding of the ways of nature, the book includes a section on the monthly changes of the Wisconsin countryside; another part that gathers informal pieces written by Leopold over a forty-year period as he traveled through the woodlands of Wisconsin, Iowa, Arizona, Sonora, Oregon, Manitoba, and elsewhere; and a final section in which Leopold addresses the philosophical issues involved in wildlife conservation. As the forerunner of such important books as Annie Dillard's
Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Edward Abbey's Desert Solitaire, and Robert Finch's The Primal Place, this classic work remains as relevant today as it was forty years ago.

"All the Little Raindrops: A Novel" by Mia Sheridan for $10.39
The chilling story of the abduction of two teenagers, their escape, and the dark secrets that, years later, bring them back to the scene of the crime. | Learn more

Inspiration and an unexpected unsolved mystery.

Inspiration and an unexpected unsolved mystery.
The words written and ideas divulged in this book are the inspiration younger generation will need in order to relearn their roots.. Although this book is great and was delivered quickly as prim shipments are. I did order a brand new paper back copy and it has a weird crease throughout the book from the first page to almost the end; the cover, front and back are unscathed. I don't plan to send it back because of this and it is completely readable but.... it is supposed to be brand new.

I loved the actual almanac and learned much about the sand county. Really gave me an appreciation for the rhythms and surprises that nature can give us. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was that the other essays, while enlightening, were not as charming as the main work of the book.

This is a beautiful book. Decades after its release, the late Aldo Leopold's signature work remains a concise, easy-to-read, poignant message about the importance of nature in our lives, even when that nature doesn't have an economic use. When you read Leopold's words, you can't help but feel inspired. With each sentence, you know that this is a man who cared deeply, passionately for his subject and wrote because he had to spread those feelings to others.

I'm a forester in my day job, the same field Aldo Leopold got his start in. For anyone in any conservation field, this book is a must-read. For anyone interested in nature, this book is a must-read. For city-dwellers who've never seen a forest or farm in their lives, this book is a must-read. Those excited about nature will appreciate Leopold's depth, and those new to nature will appreciate his clear language that shuns the technical in favor of vivid imagery.

This book should come with a warning label: "Caution: reading this book could change your life."

This book is beautiful. With a title that has the word "almanac" in it, I was expecting a dry, more scientific and objective book, but honestly, Leopold's writing is pure poetry. His observations and thoughts on nature are timeless and his ability to bring plants and animals to life on his pages is nothing short of magic. Read this book if you love nature. Read this book if you wish you loved nature. Read this book if you've never thought about nature. Read this book if you're looking for some exceptional writing. I don't care what your reason is, just READ THIS BOOK! You won't regret it.

I was first introduced to this book about 40 years ago, as a sophomore taking a seminar in the Marine Biology undergrad program at UNC-Wilmington. Up until reading that book, I had been somewhat less-than-motivated by typical college books and courses. But soon after opening the first pages, I knew I had stumbled upon something special. This was my first peak into the window of a qualitative approach to the sciences, ecology, the philosophy of science, and then philosophy proper.

I later spent a few summers fighting mountain fires in Arizona, and then I went on to become a college professor myself, spending over 30 years in Japan teaching everything from biology labs, freshman writing, and public speaking at Temple University Japan, and then an even wider variety of courses in my tenure at Jissen Women's College.

Half a life time later, and half a world away in this digital maze of Tokyo, this is still the book that brings me back to those once clear, star filled skies, the distant splash of a black bass, and a morning cup of coffee around the campfire. This is the book that reminds me — an earth lives beneath my feet, and inspires poetry in anyone who takes the time to slide back into the slippers and boots of Aldo Leopold ... a stylist and thinker for the ages, and a voice that reminds us of not only the importance of a quality life, but also the threats to our sustainability as a species.

I am writing this review only now because I treasure this book so much, I have bought several copies for friends in Japan and China. We are not so different as the media and marketing experts would have us believe.

As a Wildife Biologist in training, I have to say that I feel Aldo Leopold's work is something that should be a mandatory buy for anyone who works or will work in the biological sciences field. The language used to express both his sensory perceptions of the world around him and the importance of that world is simply flawless. Leopold is one of the few writers able to not only help you mentally visualize what is going on but to see it the same way he did emotionally at the time. "A Sand County Almanac" is a first-hand account of one year spent in Sauk County, Wisconsin with each month beginning with January receiving a section dedicated to the important events that occur within it. While "A Sand County Almanac" focuses on his personal account over the course of a year, "Sketches Here and There" is a collection of essays, and experiences from his time in the field and his experiences from the course of his life. Throughout the book, Aldo continually challenges you to look at nature as he does with a sense of wonder and amazement. In addition to his view, he quickly makes the reader realize that everything has value both aesthetically and functionally by describing what happens when a species does disappear. If you enjoy nature to any extent, I urge to give both this author and his work a chance, you will not be disappointed.

This was a textbook for a college course I took on the Environmental History of the United States of America. It is well written and does a good job of conveying what nature meant to the author at the time of writing. Interesting to contrast this book with more modern and contemporary writings about nature. I bought a copy when I first took this class and again later, a good one to have multiple copies of.

5.0 out of 5 stars A visionary and truly educated book
Reviewed in Germany on January 10, 2022
Aldo Leopold’s vast capacity to perceive even minute detail, understand systemic relationships, love and respect wilderness and nature is paralleled only by his rich use of language.

As a result of this rich and also somewhat dated language (written in 1945!) I must admit to have struggled to comprehend this text, but now am proud to have read it to the end. Without a kindle-app allowing me to efficiently use the dictionary I would not have managed. Nearly every word I looked up seemed to me to be specialized only for this specific context. At times I felt reminded of a school-time experience of translating the poems of Ovid.

Regarding content to my understanding the author’s thinking and ecological conclusions culminating in the formulation of his famous “land ethic” fully stand the test of time.

I find myself deeply impressed and wondering what to do with this literature experience.
