First the bad. It is a ridiculous story. Something hatches from a slimy, nasty egg that two geniuses find near the beach where a party is in progress being promoted under "Vegas rules", meaning that what happens on the Beach stays on the beach, so the WIC (wiseass in charge) collects all the phones and locks them in the trunk (big problem). We never see the creature (until the last few moments, and then only a part), but that is not unusual, (not optimal, but not unusual). However, in this case, one cannot even imagine what the creature looks like, or how it manages to occupy what is perhaps an acre of land occupying only the interstitial space between the tiny grains of sand, or how it manages to produce carnivorous hairs, or why it eats birds, people, and hot dogs. Perhaps I am overthinking this.
Now the good. - the girls are beautiful, the beach is beautiful, the creature is beautiful (glowing and fluorescing), even the boys are beautiful. the only exception is Gilbert, a rather plump fellow, who spends is stuck in a trash can. However, Gilbert is very, very funny. He reminds me of one of the Fat Boys. I don't know what every happened to the "Fat Boys" but thy made two hilarious movies that should have been considered by the Academy

So I was reminiscing for some reason about Blood Beach and wound up with The Sand. If it ever becomes available for Prime, it's certainly worth that, but doubtful for a rental. It doesn't lack an interesting premise, but the movie feels longer than it is, dragging at times and lacking characters with virtually any redeeming qualities. The entire film takes place on an abandoned stretch of beach where a small group of teens (or adults acting like teens) awake after a night of partying to discover they are the only ones remaining from the throng. There are a couple in a lifeguard tower, a few in a car that, of course won't run, and one inexplicably stuck upright in a barrel...and he and the situation are both insufferable. They act like teenagers, with the usual relationship drama meant to create tension, that ultimately makes the viewer wish for their their merciful and quick execution by the only interesting part of the flick, the prickly tendrils that strip the skin from unsuspecting beach goers. There are certainly movies that are far less entertaining, and if that's your idea of a successful movie, this might be for you. Otherwise, you might want to pass and find something equally mediocre on prime that creates less buyers remorse.

For fluff this is okay, and I LOVE the ending only because it actually had an ending versus the usual horror fade to black with no closure. There are some glaring errors (why is the trunk of the Saab incredibly hot but the hood is cool, why doesn't the Beach Patrol SUV have a radio, why did the one chick think it was okay to lie on her boyfriend's stomach where all the acid was, where is there any beach in California that is deserted 24/7, etc.) but it works. Could it have been a better movie? Yes, definitely. I guess the absolute best part is that you honestly don't know who is going to die, so the movie is 'egalitarian' in that sense.

The movie started out strangely. One minute it was night at the beach, partying, and the next, daylight with no one around and then back to night, etc. Then the plot started. I enjoyed the premise which was that one could not step on the sand. And the early special effects, such as the tendrils and the boils on Jonah were quite good for a low budget movie. And not really showing the monster was probably the best idea, at least holding off showing more until towards the end. The real problem is that screaming is not acting. Too much of it was over the top. And when a person’s life is in danger, that is time to bring up past loves! With decent actors and a decent script, this could have been a very interesting movie. And does anyone believe that a beach patrol officer would really behave that obnoxiously? One couldn’t wait for him to meet his end. Only towards the end did the survivors start to behave intelligently. The ending was abrupt, and when the camera pulled away, everything was in a depression, which made no sense.

It should be called Blood Beach 2, but it's a fun B-movie and that's all it is. Lots of gorgeous women in bikinis, some hot guys and a fat guy stuck in a metal trashcan take on a monster in the sand that eats people. It was shot in 17 days on a small budget, very small budget, so it ain't Shindler's List. If you're looking for something with a $25 million budget, you won't find it.
The Plot Hole that is Glaring - nobody had shoes? LOL
It's not bad acted. I wish Nikki Leigh (a gorgeous Playmate) would've been in it more cause she's gorgeous. Anyway, the other three girls are hot, too. Two of the guys are, if you're a woman.

I expected this to be on par with an old Troma production, and not in a good way. Instead I got a nice monster movie take on "the floor is hot lava" trope of Tremors, Stephen King's short story "The Raft," but with a surprisingly ingenious and novel creature. The pacing, photography, sound, and acting are all, again, much better than I expect from the usual low budget fare of Amazon Prime horror flicks.
All that said, I want to be clear: this is NOT a "good" movie ... but in the world of low budget monster movies, I think it's a delightful gem, and worth seeing for fans of the genre---especially if you're able to see if for free as a Prime member.

Love a movie with 'something different' - a different plot, creature, type of movie...

Love movies with 'something different' - a movie with not the same old horror, and this one filled the 'never imagined' that kind of monster... (spoiler) Not until the end do you get a partial view of this thing... and not all that difficult to imagine 'it could happen'...
Would've given it 5 stars if there had been a bit better acting and action... it starts extremely slow, with people put in situations/relationships? without any foundation - jealousy / rivalry slowly explained later. No idea where or how Gil got in the barrel... LOL. High rating just for being different.

A ham-fisted, lazy gore pic with patchy CGI
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 1, 2016Verified Purchase
In what amounts to a modern remake of classic schlock horror 'Blood Beach', a group of teens wake up on a beach after a drunken night of partying to find that something tries to eat them if they touch the sand.
And that's pretty much it.
The Sand has one interesting and clever moment where two characters discuss the possibility that the problem might be more widespread - after all why has no-one come looking for any of them? This is the only (very) briefly chilling moment in an otherwise ham-fisted movie. An assortment of pretty faces are given bad and predictable dialogue to spout, stupendously stupid and blatantly obvious mistakes are made, and the CGI goes from "just about okay" to looking pretty darn bad. Beer and conversation would probably make this a better film - watched as a movie, with full attention, it suffers from too many flaws.

Digital Blood Beach on a tiny budget
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 26, 2016Verified Purchase
This is another monster movie done on an extremely tight budget and while it's not a bad watch, the cost cutting is unfortunately, too obvious.
The vast majority of the film is shot in the one place on a beach, with a couple of cars and a dilapidated beach lookout as the main props. There is a small cast who generally do a remarkably good job of conveying their horror and despair about their predicament and the uncertainty around the monster under the sand. The best aspect of this film was its ability to create tension. It was able to build really effectively then reach a crisis, back off and then start all over again.
What lets the experience down is the special effects and the manner that the characters are despatched - I was hoping to see some creative practical means of dragging people slowly under but the kill scenes were mainly digital and it showed (although one of the earliest scenes was done extremely well...) This seems to have been a wasted opportunity but I guess it would have cost a lot more to use practical effects. The pace did slow down a little at times but generally it was OK, and the plot predictably was nonsense but managed competently enough with a decent ending.
Its an OK time waster but don't expect anything special.
