Jack was born in Charleston in 1861. His parents died early of cholera and his guardian died when he was fifteen, leaving him penniless and alone. He went west and got work as a cattle drover. He shot an outlaw who was trying to rob him. Another outlaw, named Ibbetson, got away alive.
Later, he ran across a cowboy called Skeeter on a cattle drive. They met again in a saloon and Skeeter asked him to help drive a herd of horses. Jack didn’t know they were stolen. He was arrested, went to jail. During his trial, he broke out of the courthouse with another inmate, who shot a courthouse constable. After that, a rope was waiting.
He went north and got work on a ranch called Sand River. For a while it looked like he’d outrun trouble. He did the job and stayed clean. But up there, range wars were being fought. Ranchers hired range detectives to handle trouble. To some, they were hired killers. One of them was Ibbetson. When they met again, Jack knew it wouldn’t end well. His past had arrived.

But he's in the wrong place too often. Made me wonder how often that happens
Entertaining, yet sad.

My Impressions: Excellent coming of age story in the 1880s and later
Main Characters: Jack Grice
Support Characters: Many others
The story begins in 1932 in Lexington, Kentucky when Jack Grice is seventy-one. Then he reminisces about his past life. At age six his parents died of Typhoid. He was sent to live with a geriatric man. Mr. Peters. When Jack was fourteen Mr. Peters died and his relative inherited the house. The relative smiled as told Jack to leave and never come back. So at fourteen Jack was on his own with only fifty dollars to carry him to God only knew where.
While escaping Jack loses his money when attacked by three ex-soldiers. He kills one and severely injures another.
And that sets the stage for the rest of the amazing tale. The story is fast paced and each page held my interest.
Jack’s goal is to become a real cowboy and join cattle drives. But along with that desire he is smart enough to learn any trade used on a cattle ranch
Jack learns he had a natural ability with firearms, pistol and rifle, and, of course, that lands him in trouble. Although he is innocent in most cases it brings the law down on him.
Sand River is complex and fast moving.
There is a hint of romance but circumstances don’t let it develop.
The editing in general is poor or the story would get the five star rating the storytelling deserves.
Sentence structure is good for the period portrayed.
Character Development is great for all the major characters
Details are abundant and frequent
Research is extraordinary in its depth to cover the 1880s.
The plot is excellent and full of conflict
The writing style is crisp and to the point and avoids wordiness.
This is the author’s first western novel. Five Peso Badge followed it and is also excellent.
I heartily recommend Sand River for all fans of early western life.

Vigilant Reader Book Reviews.
This epic saga tells the story of Jack Grice, a young cowboy who just wanted to make an honest living as a trail driver, but, through circumstances not of his making, becomes a hunted man. Told in the first person narrative, the novel takes the reader from Jack's early childhood to becoming a drover for one of Texas' most prominent ranchers, "Shanghai" Pierce. Then, through a series of misadventures, Jack unwittingly shoots and kills a man. Changing his name, he flees to Wyoming, where he finds work on a large ranch.
As the story progresses, Jack becomes embroiled in the Johnson County War and he kills even more men, all in self defense. Eventually, he is captured and brought to trial.
Without revealing too much of the twists and turns of the plot, it's safe to say that this is one well-told story. The dialog rings true. Growing up in Southwest Texas, I've heard ranchers and stove-up cowboys use the same laconic language; idioms and colloquialisms all in place.
The author paints a superb tapestry of the West with all of its beauty and deadly hardships. As a reader, you can almost see Jack trying to write what really happened during his life; to set the record straight and debunk the mythology fabricated by the newspapers of the day.
Great Western, I would wholeheartedly recommend the book.
He is fast and handy with a .44 Colt revolver and gets into trouble and mixed up in the cattle rustling in Wyoming later on. His survival skills and his lawyer keep him alive in this action-packed story. I really enjoyed this book for keeping my interest for almost 400 pages and highly recommend it.
