"Eight-hundred feet down, sandhogs... are working around the clock toward completion of what has been called the largest construction project in the western hemispherethe city s third water tunnel. But the sound of their giant drill is so buffered by layers of rock that New Yorkers sleep undisturbed, and even the dogs don t bark. [These] photos are as close as Gothamites will ever get to the $6 billion project ...the 60-mile underground labyrinth." --
"LeVay s rare access has allowed her to create a unique and extensive visual exploration of the workers behind the crucial subterranean system that will keep NYC supplied with fresh water in the 21st century." --

are they accompanied by explanatory text which helps the viewer understand the essence of the image. While Ms. LeVay's complete multimedia work may have compensated for the shallowness of her book, this collection of art-photos is not interesting, provocative or attractive enough to warrant its addition to any but the most inclusive collections. You will be disappointed.
What a hypocrisy of a Foreward by Thomas Kelly and a shame on Ms. LeVay. In paragraph number five he writes the following, " We live in a country where we seem everless capable of building, creating, and doing. We simply can't get things done. The sandhogs still do." I have nothing but respect for the Sandhogs and their work. In addition, Mr. Kelly is a fantastic author. I have read all of his books multiple times.
If Ms. LeVay is so truly proud of these unique American Union workers, then she should have put her money where her mouth was and printed her book in the U.S. What a shame!
