Disappointing Performance

I have used SanDisk flash products for many years. They have produced some of the best performing and most reliable flash memory on the market (including USB thumb drives and SSDs). I have had a SanDisk Extreme USB 3.0 drive for several years, and it has delivered very good performance. I wanted some new drives, so I bought some SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 drives. They were garbage and had terrible performance. So I bout the new version of the Extreme expecting similar performance to my older drive.

Unfortunately, the new drive has about 25% slower reads, and 50% slower writes than my old drive. This is not consistent with a high end product nor the high price. I don't know how SanDisk, has managed to degrade their products so badly. I will not be buy any more of their flash memory products.

Update: I recently bought a SanDisk Extreme PRO 128GB that functions like this Extreme Go should, speed wise. Go buy one of those and steer clear of this junk; it might be twice the price, but it's the true performance and speed that is quoted on the packaging of this 'Go' product and more. It's a shame to the 'Extreme' name. Alternately you can also buy a Patriot Magnum / Magnum2 and those perform just as well.

The packaging states "Up to" 200 read / 150 write speeds as well as the drive being USB 3.1 Gen 1 (aka USB 3.0) and it is not only erratic, but false advertising. This thing won't get anywhere near what is listed write wise. Avoid this and pay heavy attention to the low star reviews on here for this product and the Pro line (SDCZ880) if you dare consider purchasing, so you are not surprised when you receive slow speeds. The Pro units seem to be getting a lot of dud / failure reports on top of the slower than advertised speeds as well.

I tried four different systems for the one I received: two AMD and two Intel (one Intel was a laptop) and it fared the same on all of them. The read speed was nowhere near 200 but it fared fine depending on the system, though said speed was very erratic. The write speed on this is complete garbage at not even being able to break 40 MB/sec on any system. I have 3.0 ports on all four of the systems, so it's not a port issue here; I have zero problems with any other flash drives (including my Patriot Magnum 1 and 2, as well as my high end SanDisks) and with several external mechanical hard drives, all of which beat out this thing in read and write speeds without any issues, hands down. I have had my 128GB Patriot Magnum 1 for 3 years and it still acts like the day I bought it. This drive copying to the Magnum 1 or 2 holds those drives back, that is how much of a false statement that read speed is.
I thought it was possibly just the files I was trying to transfer, but all three benchmarks I ran (CrystalDiskMark, h2testw, and Flash Bench) resulted the same on everything - you can easily see other people's images of these tests on here and it's the same on my end with the slow, falsely advertised speeds.

When I first read up on these units, I was finding reviews about how they were great and the reviews here on Amazon I was taking with a grain of salt. Looking over all the marketing and packaging, Sandisk has a tendency to only put the actual write speed on their packaging if the drive has premium / fast chips in it - this has applied for years and especially to their SD cards; you can easily see this on their other product lines and even their cheap SD cards versus their expensive ones. I have consistently gotten close to all these speeds over the years as stated. The same goes for their Extreme line - however something here has failed miserably to the point that it is definitely not true, at least as far as this product is concerned.

The good? At least this happened right off the bat and I will be returning it, though I won't be getting another. This is straight up false advertisement and SanDisk needs to not list that something has 'Up To 150 MB/sec" write speeds if they are not going to load a drive with chips that is capable of even reaching half that. The marketing on their own website even states this nonsense.

The bad is above, however the worst of this? Go on Sandisk's user forums about this product and look around. Multiple threads of nothing but rude users and moderators blaming other users coming there asking questions about why their drives are so slow, pointing the finger back at the people asking, saying that the slow speeds are due to "formatting the drive." This is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard of in my life in regards to computing, and I have been using them for 30 years. People were seriously stating that there was some kind of special formatting on the drive as it being the reason for it being slow after because that was 'formatted away'. Hardly. If this drive requires special non-formatting that is separate from the normal NTFS or exFAT ability that it is meant to use, they need to list it in a manual or some other place on the packaging - such a thing is not standard in any aspect.

Quite disappointed with the speed.
I bought this drive because it claims the write speed up to 150 MB/s, but the actual write speed is only between 55 and 85 MB/s. I did a benchmark test with the FlashBench app at the seller's recommendation, and got the same result with the peek write speed below 85 MB/s, not even close to the claimed write speed of 150 MB/s. I also used CrystalDiskMark5 to test the drive, and got the similar disappointing results. Maybe it's just my luck that the drive is not as fast as it should have been since other buyers seem all very satisfied with the write speed. Wonder if the service crew of SanDisk can do anything to fix the problem. Maybe the SanDisk service will say that the speed is depending on the interface of the connection of the computer, but my other USB 3.0 flash drives are all at or near par, so it must not have been my computer.

I use a LOT of thumb drives. This was by far the most dissapointing sandisk product I've used. I usually love the extreme's but for some reason they've gotten outrageously expensive for the same models i've been using for years. All new products, such as this go, have been drastically slower, and although the build quality feels the same, they've died on me. This last one died after just a few months, being transported in a case. Cannot be recognized by anything. Properly stored, properly ejected. Just went faulty. This is unlike most sandisk products and I still respect and trust the company, but this was very disappointing. The time in which it failed actually cost me money too. I won't be buying this product again, and I highly suggest you do not either. But maybe you'll have more luck than me. I'll find a similar product that lives to the standards of the old one.

Why do we have to tolerate this BS?

This is the third 128GB USB memory stick that I have purchased in the last few weeks.

I need one to transfer video from a full 128GB MicroSD card to allow viewing on TVs.

The exFat formatted capacity of the MicroSD card is 116GB. This is partly because of the industry wide marketing fudge of measuring capacity as Decimal bytes rather than actual Binary bytes. However, it is still of lower storage capacity than claimed: 124.75GB when measured as specified by the manufacturer. It is what it is and until we all stop accepting this BS it will continue.

However, I knew this, so I am trying to find a USB stick that will all allow all the recorded footage to be transferred to a USB stick as quickly as possible. So I need a USB stick with a minimum binary storage capacity of 116GB and fast sequential write speed.

Patriot 128GB Supersonic Rage 2: Available storage decimal capacity 123.9GB, actual binary 115.4GB
Claimed write speed: Up to 200MB/s - Actually 90MB/s (due to a descriptive error in specification by seller).

So insufficient size for my needs but fast, though half as fast as claimed (this error has still not been rectified by the seller).

Lexar 128GB S75 Jumpdrive: Available storage decimal capacity (not recorded), actual binary 117GB.
Claimed write speed: up to 60MB/s - Actually 14.5MB/s (read speed was way above spec. at 208MB/s).
So sufficient size but unacceptably, woefully slow for my needs.

SanDisk 128GB Extreme Go: Available storage decimal capacity 126.5GB, actual binary 117GB.
Claimed write speed: up to 150MB/s - Actually 38MB/s (slower than a SanDisk 64Gb Ultra at 42MB/s).
So sufficient size, but way below spec. and at a premium over the slightly faster Ultra.

I can't be the only one frustrated by this (deliberate?) obfuscation of performance specification. How is one supposed to buy anything if the description and/or specifications are theoretical when realistically they are fantasy!

Make a stand! Test your digital storage devices and if they don't meet the claimed specification just keep sending them back until this BS stops.

All tests conducted with CrystalDiskMark on Win7. Drives tested as delivered. Reformatting to NTFS, exFAT or FAT32 made little difference.

En premier lieu, il est un peu décevant que SanDisk ne présente pas de manière totalement honnête à mon sens la norme USB de sa clé (sans doute comme d'autres). Alors qu'il est clairement écrit 3.1 sur la clé et l'emballage, il s'agit en réalité d'USB 3.0, qui est deux fois plus lent. Il est sûr que cela est moins moderne et vendeur...

Les responsables de la norme USB ont eu la "bonne" idée de changer la manière de nommer les versions USB, passant à un système inutilement complexe et pouvant être exploité pour, à mon sens, tromper les consommateurs. Le nom de l'USB 3.1 a été changé en USB 3.1 Gen 2. Le nom de l'USB 3.0 a alors été rétroactivement changé en USB 3.1 Gen 1 !

Pour résumer :
USB 3.1 = USB 3.1 Gen 2
USB 3.0 = USB 3.1 Gen 1

SanDisk mélange les deux nomenclatures en utilisant la version longue mais en omettant Gen 1, ce qui n'a pour moi aucun sens. En regardant la fin de la description constructeur (notes sous le tableau) , SanDisk indique qu'il s'agit d'USB 3.1 Gen 1, qui équivaut à l'USB 3.0 et non à l'USB 3.1.

1/2 étoile est déduite pour cela.

Le point le plus gênant pour moi est la vitesse d'écriture bien plus faible qu'annoncé.

A noter que la vitesse d'écriture dépend énormément du formatage (exFAT, HFS+ etc.). En copiant sous macOS High Sierra environ 15 Go d'applications de mon MacBook Pro 2017 au SSD à lecture et écriture ultra rapide (plusieurs Go/s), pour être sûr que le facteur limitant ne soit que la clé et pas l'ordinateur, le débit constaté (par ordre décroissant) est de :

* 41 Mo/s en APFS, ce qui est clairement très en deçà des 150 Mo/s mis en avant. Ce format est le dernier né d'Apple, spécialement optimisé et conçu pour les supports non mécaniques (SSD, flash etc.). Cette faible vitesse d'écriture est donc d'autant plus décevante.

* 35 Mo/s en HFS+. C'est le format historique sous Mac, lancé à l'époque des supports mécaniques en 1998.

* 6,6 Mo/s en exFAT. Ce format est ancien, mais il est nativement reconnu par Mac, Windows et bien d'autres systèmes (consoles de jeux etc.). C'est aussi et pour cette raison, je pense, le format de la clé.

Par ailleurs, ces vitesses se comparent à environ 10 Mo/s obtenus en copiant ces même données sur un disque dur externe, USB 3.0, mécanique, relativement lent (5 200 tours / minute), et formaté en HFS+.

1 1/2 étoile est déduite pour la vitesse en deçà de ce qui est mis en avant.

Quelques autres observations.

La clé ne me donne pas l'impression d'être très solide. Le "slider" qui permet de sortir et rétracter le connecteur bouge un peu quand la clé est connectée, alors que le slider est stable dans la génération précédente de cette clé (j'avais acheté le modèle 64 Go fin 2016). J'espère qu'il ne s'agit que d'une impression (j'ai la clé depuis quelques jours seulement).

Un voyant bleu existe au niveau de la partie inférieure du slider (celle vers l'extérieur quand la clé est connectée). Cet assez grand voyant s'allume et s'éteint en permanence (une caractéristique que SanDisk ne mentionne pas), même quand la clé n'est pas utilisée voir pas reconnue (format non pris en charge par l'OS). Cette approche n'est pour moi pas des plus rationnelles, et peut même énerver certaines personnes ou dans une pièce peu éclairée. Une lumière uniquement quand la clé lit ou écrit des données me semblerait plus adéquate et utile. (La génération précédente n'avait aucune lumière, ce qui ne m'a jamais manqué.)

Malgré tout, trois étoiles sont attribués car 1) le prix réduit de 39 euros pour 128 Go d'USB 3.0 est avantageux, 2) je ne transfert beaucoup de données que rarement et 3) ma clé n'est pas souvent connectée (problème de lumière bleue limité). Au prix normal, je prendrais la version "pro" au débit d'écriture bien plus rapide pour seulement 10 euros de plus.

Einfach nur schlecht!!!

Auf sowas den Label "extreme" zu setzen ist in meinen Augen fast ein Betrugsversuch!
Hier sind 2 Benchmarks: Einmal ca. 5 Jahre alte Extreme64 und der neue "extremeGO128"
Getestet auf W7/64 USB 3.0 direct am Motherboard.
Sandisk hat vermutlich Endung "go" bloß aus juristischen Gründen drauf gemacht, weil das ding hat nichts mit Extreme Serie zu tun. Solche Werte erreicht man auch mit 20€ Sticks.
Im meinen Augen das Label Extreme auf solchen Sticks zu benutzen ist als ob man auf VW Polo "Porsche 911 GT3 City" kleben wird.
Ehrlich gesagt bin echt enttäuscht von Sandisk letzte Zeit. MicroSD Karten halten nicht mal 1 Jahr, jetzt wird
noch mit Namen rumgespielt. Mobile Sparte von denen verliert echt am Boden. Schade...

Clé imposante mais rapide

Les performances annoncées sont assez fidèles à la réalité. J'ai fait quelques benchmarks aussi bien en exFat qu'en NTFS (les différences sont négligeables). Vous pourrez trouver les liens vers les résultats de tests en fin de commentaire.

En lecture la clé tiens à ~190MB/s pour les fichiers supérieurs à 512KB. Ensuite comme pour toute clé USB, les performances s'effondrent, on n'est plus qu'à 100MB/s pour du 32KB, à 40MB/s pour du 8KB et 3.5MB/s pour du 1KB.

En écriture, selon mes tests cela oscillait entre 110MB/s et 150MB/s avec une tendance pour le plus bas pour des fichiers supérieurs à 512KB. Ensuite on n'est plus qu'à 90MB/s pour du 256KB, à 40MB/s pour du 64KB et <0.5MB/s pour du 1KB.

A titre de comparaison, j'ai une Corsair Flash Voyageur Mini, en USB 3.0, qui ne dépasse pas les 22MB/s en lecture et 10MB/s en écriture. La différence est impressionnante.

Pour résumer, comme souvent, cette clé est excellente pour transférer des fichiers volumineux (ex: films) mais peine plus pour des petits fichiers (fichiers de codes).

Petit point négatif, la clé est assez large, et dépassera de ~5mm de chaque côté du port USB. Ce qui peut gêner sur certains ordinateurs portables où les ports sont très rapprochés. Cependant en l'achetant je cherchais plus les performances que le côté compact.

Précision utile 1 : Lors de l'insertion, il faut penser à ne pas laisser les doigts sur le bouton d'extraction. Je ne m'en rendais pas compte au début, mais en gardant le doigt sur le bouton, au moment de pousser la clé dans le port USB j'appuyais très légèrement dessus, ce qui libérait le port et l'effet "ressort" du port USB, rendant l'insertion difficile. Or si on ne laisse pas le doigt dessus, le port reste bloqué et s'insère bien plus facilement.

Précision utile 2 : la fiche produit indique que la clé est en USB 3.1. On parle ici d'USB 3.1 "gen 1" (anciennement 3.0) et non "gen 2". Donc si votre PC était vendu en tant qu'USB 3.0, vous profitez déjà du maximum de la clé.

Précision utile 3 : j'ai reçu un premier modèle dont le contour métallique du port USB était tordu, rendant le branchement à un PC impossible. Ce malgré l'emballage en bon état et le connecteur rétracté dans la clé usb. Je pense donc à un défaut de fabrication. Heureusement le retour SAV d'amazon se fait très simplement et j'ai pu recevoir un nouveau modèle. Pensez à vérifier ce point.

Good capacity, but definitely not the fastest chip

The Sandisk Extreme Go SDCZ800-128G-G46 USB3.1 sticks are nominal 128GB good speed devices with a fast interface. They are ideal for sending big chunks of data through snailmail in a jiffybag, and also where there is not a local high speed interconnect between machines.

There was some clutter on the sticks taking up some valuable space when first examined, but I always reformat new media to remove any possible Trojans etc and NTFS is a more robust file system than exFAT. I also always test them to check for speed and capacity.

At first sight the retractable plug is handy, but the contacts are still just as exposed to dust dirt and static. So in reality this feature is simply a gimmick and a waste of space, and these sticks end up being about 2cms longer than normal sticks which makes them more vulnerable to accidental knocks while plugged into, say, a laptop.

H2TestW gave me an average write speed of 35.2MBytes/s and 57:12 minutes to write the whole chip, double the speed of the 128GB Sandisk Ultra chips, and steady between 35.5 and 35.0 all the way through. However, I have seen this test write between 95 and 105Mbytes/s on the older 32GB Sandisk Extreme USB3 devices on this machine, almost three times faster, so it is definitely the chip that is slowing it down.

Read speed is much better, at 135Mbytes/s and 14:52 minutes to verify the whole chip, but still does not fully exercise the USB3 interface, and still slower than the 32GB which were about 168Mbytes/s.

Storage is shown as 117GB available on the PC, actually 126,533,763,072 bytes, when formatted as exFAT with default sector sizes. NTFS has a slightly bigger overhead so slightly less available storage at 126,452,592,640. There were no bad locations on either of my two samples.

The chip runs at about 15°C above ambient, nowhere near as hot as some I've tested, but then it is not working as hard. This is actually a good thing, because running cooler should maximise lifespan and reliability.

I have specifically ignored the Sandisk encryption system because I don’t know anything about its provenance and also because it is an all eggs in one basket system. If it is unavoidably necessary to encrypt any files I’ll do them individually with software I know and trust, and give each a unique pass key.
