I just finished the show on Netflix and was motivated to read the comics - think that the ideas presented in the show would be explored in greater depth in the comic. For now - I think the show did a fantastic job and dare I say it’s even better than the comic. But it’s still interesting to see how the story was being told in this form, and what the show added to it.

...even better than the series. I think Tom Sturridge is performing his role as Dream very well, but I'm not entirely happy that they chose to allow him ordinary human eyes. Those black eyes, with endless, unfathomable depths, made Dream's appearance otherworldly. The series has closely emulated the book, so far.
But, the books...sublime.

I have read and enjoyed many of Neil Gaiman's short stories and novels, and I've always meant to get around to reading the Sandman series, but I didn't want to buy it before trying it and it's hard to get from libraries. Trying the free first issue was great, especially since I am not a big graphic novel person! I was really impressed with how the material has been formatted for the Kindle. I'm reading it on an older Kindle keyboard, and I found it easy to navigate and read. The story was a bit weird for me--like entering a room full of characters and you're not sure which ones you need to remember and which ones are only passing through--but I'm intrigued enough to buy the second issue and keep reading. I've heard many Sandman fans say that it takes a bit to get into the story, and I did like it enough to keep on going!

This is not my first introduction to Neil Gaiman. I met him in Neverwhere, where he gave me a privileged tour of the unknown London underground -- the real underground that regular chaps know nothing of. So when he asked me to accompany his friend Morpheus on his daily rounds, I could not refuse. I should have known, with a name like Morpheus, that he would be addictive. In a good way. I was stunned by the life he lives; by the people he meets -- those that live in this world, and those that live in the imagination; by the places he can go to-- in this era, and any other. But he is the master of the dreaming world. Of course, he can go anywhere; be at any time. Before I knew it, I was the one begging to be invited on the next trip, and the next, and the next.
This is a great book for those who are ready to travel out of place and time, and meet people both real and mythological.

Due to a ritual, a creature is trapped as people fall asleep never to wake. As time
passes, will he ever be free? I have been meaning to read this series and I started with
this issue. The art is eerie and stunning as you watch time go from 1916 to the 1980's.
Must read and get the rest of the series. Mature themes and situations.

... that hasn't already been said. Many words have been offered trying to explain how good this is. I'm not sure what I could possibly add, but here goes. This is an amazing graphic novel. The start of an incredible story and an incredible story in its own right. It has everything. Great characters encountering amazing situations in the most incredible ways possible. When a friend offered to lend me Sandman #1 I wasn't sure what to make but by the end of the first collection I was hooked. I've been steadily buying as many of these as I can and someday I will have them all. This is an amazing achievement that deserves to stand next to the great classics of literature. Truly awe inspiring. Why are you still reading this review? Buy it already. Seriously.

This is my first time reading any of the Sandman saga in electronic form. I have all of the original comics and had the good fortune to see Mr. Gaiman well over a decade ago at a reading for Stardust when it came out and he signed my original copy of this - Issue #1. I also own the whole series in trade paperback which is how I have read the series most frequently. I treasure these stories and the overall tale they tell. Though it may be based in a graphic format, do not be mistaken. This is literature. It is brilliant and absolutely worthwhile reading.
Neil Gaiman is first and foremost a storyteller. However, as is with the best storytellers, he is a master observer of the human condition. This is but one of many vehicles through which he imparts his understanding to his audience. Savor this and enjoy the experience. And be sure to let others know once you've read it.

Personally, I prefer a comic that plumbs the depths of good and evil and man's relation to man in which the bad guys dissolve into a pile of goo. Sandman delivers on that dual promise with a very crisp story of a male coven/gentlemen's club who want to trap death and wind up with the god of dreams. There are little tragic subThe tone is similar to Alan Moore's. What I adore about Moore is very similar to what I enjoyed about this comic. It takes itself just a shade too seriously and that tone together yields a certain pulpy, overwrought quality that writers in other formats don't play with. Comics is where you can do that without shame and when it's done well it's such a pleasure.

I enjoyed the quick pace but it was over too soon. I need more sandman.
It's a dark tale definitely give it a try. If you're not familiar with graphic novels, this would be a nice one to start off with. Not too long.
