“The Sandman: The Complete First Season” collects the first 11 episodes of the Netflix adaptation of the comic created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, and Mike Dringenberg. The first episode introduces Morpheus (Tom Sturridge), also known as Dream of the Endless, a being representing the very concept of dreaming. He was captured by Roderick Burgess (Charles Dance) in the Edwardian Era, only escaping in our time. The series shifts Dream’s escape from the 1980s setting of the comic to the present day at the time of airing. From there, Morpheus must return to the Dreaming and seek his tools of power, which were taken from him and distributed around the world. This brings him into contact with Constantine (Jenna Coleman) and Lucifer (Gwendoline Christie). Meanwhile, a man possessing one of Dream’s totems wreaks havoc on a small town diner. After completing his quest, Dream feels listless until his sister Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste) provides him with a little perspective and reunites him with an old friend. In Dream’s absence, one of his nightmares escaped the Dreaming and now walks in the waking world, terrorizing people. Dream must investigate this while also discovering a new threat to the Dreaming. The final episode features two stories adjacent to the main plot, with one focusing on a cat’s goal to remake the world through dreams while in the other story a man seeks a muse no matter the cost.
Some of the DC/Vertigo characters in this series previously appeared in their own shows, specifically Constantine and Lucifer. In order to distinguish this series from what came before and give it narrative freedom, neither Matt Ryan nor Tom Ellis reprise their roles as Constantine and Lucifer, respectively. Rounding out the cast are Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Patton Oswalt as the voice of Matthew the Raven, Vivienne Acheampong as Lucienne, Vanesu Samunyai as Rose Walker, Mason Alexander Park as Desire, Razane Jammal as Lyta Hall, Sandra James-Young as Unity Kincaid, David Thewlis as John Dee, Lily Travers as Barbie, Richard Fleeshman as Ken, Lenny Henry as Martin Tenbones, Asim Chaudhry as Abel, Cassie Clare as Mazikeen, Ann Ogbomo as Gault, Danny Kirrane as Fun Land, Mark Hamill as the voice of Merv Pumpkinhead, Sanjeev Bhaskar as Cain, and many more.

Dream (The Sandman) is the master of the dream realm--untill he is captured and imprisoned for a century by a human using an incantation of magic.
When he finally escapes, he discovers the dream realm in ruins and his tokens of power in the hands of humans.
He embarks on a mission to recover his tokens of power and rebuild the dream realm to its former glory.
On his journey we meet his family members Desire and Death. We spend a day with Death watching her devotedly collecting souls, visit a convention for serial killers where he hunts for a nightmare creature who has escaped into the real world, track down an individual known as a Vortex, who can unwittingly bring reality crashing down if not stopped, and a host of others.
The series follows a ten episode story arc and after the last episode concludes the story, we are then surprisingly treated to a bonus episode with two original stories that The Sandman factors into in one way or another.
This series delivers a really satisfying watch with interesting characters and situations, along with wonderful fantasy concepts to explore.
The 4K Blu-rays really deliver too. They do justice in every way to the incredibly visual images and special effects. These discs take the picture up to the next level well above the streaming versions on Netflix.
The Atmos sound is superlative too. It leaves the audio from the Netflix streaming version in the dust!
I couldn't recommend this series on 4K Blu-ray any more highly.

Based on Neil Gaiman’s reimagining of the DC comic, “Sandman” takes us into the world of Dream the king of sleep and dreams. As one of the Endless, Dream is captured in a misguided attempt by a rich man who has lost his son. Casting a spell hoping to capture Death, he must settle on Morpheus aka n Dream his tools-his sand, his robe, his powerful creative jewel that allows him to craft the creatures of the land of dreaming and his helm. Without it, Dream is powerless to escape. His captures also results in a sleeping sickness that consumes children and adults for the 106 years he is in his glass prison. When Dream escapes, he has to undo the damage done by others including Corinthian a creature he created.
A top notch production with exceptional production design, “Sandman” is a marvelous and largely faithful adaption. Where it does digress,mit makes sense narratively.
The transfer looks terrific. Colors pop, exceptional detail, depth and delineation. It’s an excellent looking presentation of the 11 episodes over three discs. The Dolby Atmos. It is immersive and really highlights the rich score and world of Morpheus.
There are only two special features on the discs. A preview of the series that ran on Netflix and a featurette on that explains the world of the Endless-seven powerful beings that shape our world during waking and dream time.
Filled with some terrific performances including Jenna Coleman in a gender flipped take on Constantine, Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, Boyd Holbrook as Corinthian, Vivienne Achaeampong and, of course, Tom Sturridge as Morpheus. His calm demeanor as Morpheus perfectly captures the essence of the character.
