Gillly Whitesmith lost her husband to cancer. Never one to put her heart out there to another man because of the thought of betraying her dead husband, she’s raised her kids and concentrated on her job.
Conrad Smith, beautiful soul and beautiful widow himself, is trying to raise his son and keep his own demons in check. One chance meeting over a fantastic car brings these lost souls together. Can they build a future and learn that sometimes fate is on your side?
This book is unique in its story and writing style. Ms. Schaefer uses her creative imagination to bring you in to the lives of the characters and their emotions. I found myself laughing and crying during this book. A heartfelt story about deep emotional loss and finding love again. How lives are entangled and how love will bring happiness, families and future within your reach.
Beautifully written, this story is a must for any romantic reader.
I really and truly appreciated the fact that the author chose to include so many topics that are sort of considered taboo or risqué in a way. Lesbian children, menopause, older couples and love, cancer, alcoholism, suicide, pregnant teenagers, and deportation just to name the BIG ones. I like moxie and this author certainly has that in spades. She introduces a silver fox with charm and problems and then ALLLLLLL of these wonderful issues that will also be resolved by the end of the book. I think that’s the best thing about standalone novels as well. I get a clear and solid ending that ties up loose ends and leaves me without a doubt satisfied.

Gilly lost her husband of 13 years, the love of her life, to cancer. Conrad’s wife of 6 years died in a car accident. Years have passed for both as they have tried to get a handle on life and deal with their grief and neither has been in a relationship. Both have children and as we get glimpses into Gilly & Conrad’s pasts, we see the overwhelming amount of love they each had for their spouses and what they went through with their losses.
“Once in seclusion, I lose it. All of the stress and drama from the past week manifest into evil tears and vomit, and I’ve had enough.”
Gilly & Conrad both are feeling guilty at pursuing a relationship with each other but they cannot deny the connection they are feeling. Their interactions are fun and had me laughing at times. There is so much sincerity in this story. The lost loves of each are not forgotten as Gilly & Conrad move forward with their relationship and it’s beautiful to see the formation of their family while paying homage to their lost loves.
The dialogue of this book is great. I love how it’s written, as if she’s speaking to you. There’s lots of wit and she goes off in these fun tangents.
“Okay ladies! MUSCLE UPDATE! Remember I told you I’d get back to you on the whole muscle thing? This man is scrumptiously muscular!”
The support system in this story is tremendous. The children are wonderful and you couldn’t ask for better friends and family than Tania & Eric. They have so much love and the encouragement and assistance they give is immense throughout the story.
There’s so much more to this story than just finding love! Part 2 of the book tore me apart. The things that happen will touch you deeply. This book is heavy on the heart with just the right amount of wit to lighten it up when needed. It’s emotional, sweet, beautiful, and endearing.
“Words failed to express how good it felt to finally feel as though I could move on. To not having every living moment be consumed by grief. By loss. By death. My soul warmed to the thought of f’ing living again.”
