Elizabeth and Simon have evolved into two very complicated and delightful and sometimes frustrating people! I love that their relationship has not stagnated but that it continues to flow and ebb like all relationships do. I think Elizabeth shows the most growth in this installment. She's no longer the will 'of a wisp, lurch into danger without thought girl that she was in book one and it serves her well in this story. She will always be ELIZABETH, of course, but it's safe to say that the events that unfolded in Natchez, Mississippi have changed her outlook some. Simon, always protective, is struggling as well, but now instead of a man who simply reacts he has become one actively trying to consider all angles. He is not always successful, but he is always trying.
Of course the writing in this book is tight and fast and the plotting is twisty and curvy and wonderfully fun and sometimes dark. It wouldn't be a Martin book if it weren't. It's clear to this reader just how much effort and time and sweat and tears Monique puts into her work. These aren't random facts about Egypt and tombs and pharoahs and sand storms she's grabbed out of a 'fun facts' website. She has once again managed to integrate so much interesting history into her story without me feeling like I've somehow jumped into a dry history text. Always in context, always through the eyes of the main characters, always with purpose. Her descriptions are vivid enough for me to picture, her prose easy enough of the ears for me to hear, and her characters (all of them) so intricately drawn that I can understand their motivations for each and every action. They all feel like they have backstories. Nothing cardboard or stock about them. I want more Diana. I want to know about Arthur's happily ever after. I flippin' need a pocket-sized Hassan to make my life easier. (And obviously my toes went all curly the instant I realized that JACK IS BACK!!! And the hair stood up on the back of my neck when the Big Bad was revealed. Noooo... really??? OMG!!! LOVE it!!!)
This story sets up some VERY interesting scenarios for Simon and Elizabeth's future, and I for one have already requested that Ms. Martin drop everything and start book 7.
I wish these books could be made into films! Can't wait for the next adventure, I'd like to see Simon and Elizabeth in London in the 1880's....very gothic!
This next chapter in the lives of Simon, Elizabeth and Jack, brings back an old enemy to terrorise them. This enemy definitely challenges them.
What I really love about these stories is the relationships and how they grow and strengthen. Jack never seems like a third wheel. And Monique Martin certainly hasn't created some sordid, unworkable, doomed to blow up love triangle. She has created a workable wonderful friendship where Jack contributes equally to the adventures. I look forward to when he finally is able to find someone challenging and wonderful who compliments him and adds to this kick-ass trio.
Next year can't come soon enough to find out where they are off to next! I wonder if Colonial Australia is ever going to feature??????
