It's so easy to get hooked on these particular time travel stories...they're certainly well developed and well rounded without any loose threads or holes. They don't disintegrate or unravel. They're captivating (although now with this 6th installment, they've become repetitively boring)... Each story can stand alone or you can begin at book #1, read them in order and gain more emotional character depth, continuing the drama and adventures with characters you've grown to know and love. There is always some form of supernatural phenomenon occurrences in each book.
The downside however, is the stories have become repetitive. Take two time travel adventurers who set out to save a life or rescue a person, or solve some mystery...or... whatever. Then place them in a different era and you've got the basis to your story......again. This installment made more sense than the previous two titles (books 4 & 5). At least in THIS installment, consequences to world history as we know it is in jeopardy of changing should our H/h fail. THIS installment had a plausible purpose.
For nearly his entire life, Simon Cross was resigned to being alone...but then he met Elizabeth and everything changed (book #1). His world came to life in vivid color when he met her. He's no longer emotionally detached or withdrawn from life. Now, because of Elizabeth's love, he lives for something more. Simon Cross is the epitome of the prim and proper English gentleman. He's in his 40's and quite stuffy and had been quite satisfied with his lonely existence. Not any more. Now there is only Elizabeth.
He's a tall, handsome & brilliant Professor who teaches "Intro. to Occult Studies"... With his deep, hypnotic English accented baritone voice, his class is a captive audience. His powerfully graceful and fluid movements across the room hold every student spellbound. He's devoted his life for proof of his studies; that is, does paranormal activities exist? I absolutely love Simon's character and the love he holds for his wife is all consuming.
Elizabeth West is a twenty-something modern girl from Lubbock, Tx. She is a strong & brave, intelligent and feisty gal, full of sass and pluck...and she's the polar opposite of Simon Cross. She's young, enthusiastic with life...rambunctious- - a free-spirit if there ever was one...she sometimes acts before she thinks it completely through. And she loves Simon Cross and would do anything for him. Time travel has changed her in ways she hadn't expected.
This 6th installment takes them both to 1920 Egypt to locate a lost [time travel] pocket watch. Even though this installment held much more narration and descriptive details (and less dialogue), I'm forced to admit I do somewhat enjoy each of these "Hardy Boys meets Nancy Drew" plots with this proper English professor being thrown into yet another time travel adventure with rambunctious and accident prone, Ms. Elizabeth West/Cross. Their dialogue, at times, is simply deliciously humorous as they work through their dilemma of rescuing/saving/locating someone or some THING.... and getting back home safely and in one piece.
It's a fun, fast paced and fascinating concept for a plot (even though it's grown tedious). There's very little romantic or intimate interludes. Most intimate moments are "implied" and then the plot moves on. Somewhat disappointing to me....but then again the story is about the adventure and not the romance.
This particular story of time travel was a well developed, solid effort with great attention to detail. I do love these characters...and I appreciate NO CLIFF HANGERS, but it's not enough for me to continue with the same (or similar) plot to book 7. For me, it's run its course.
The history is much better as the author also grows. I love learning about the time, places and people in the books. Jack is a wonderful character and is handling the situations much better too. If you like time travel, history and great characters, you will enjoy these books. I highly recommend this series of books. Egypt is a place of mystery and tales of ancient tombs, pharoahs and the underworld. Read it you will like it!
first. In this book, the characters Elizabeth and Simon run into are fairly well developed. I particularly liked reading about what high society was like in 1920's Egypt. Ms Martin seems to do a lot of research on her various locales. Although this book could stand on its own, I would recommend the series be read in order. I say this because the most enjoyable part of reading them is the continuing evolution of Simon and Elizabeth's relationship.
