I had the trial version on my iphone and my 3 year old loved it - reading unit 1 books the first day! I decided to buy the whole thing for the kindle fire (bigger screen and I'd rather not have him on my phone). I still love the app itself, but it's too buggy. First, it was kicking us out after every 1-2 songs/games. I called customer service and they had me clear data, uninstall and reinstall, refunded my purchase and had me repurchase. Issue persisted. a week later, we repeated the whole process. without these issues, it would totally be worth the $50. As it is, its not even worth the free download. makes me wish I had an ipad.

I purchased the entire 12 units by using Amazon coins in-app purchasing. I didn't have any technical problems. Once I bought them they all lit up, and I simply had to download each unit before we could use it. I would highly recommend this app to anyone. I've been using it as a part of homeschooling for my 5 and 3 year old. It's easy to use and it's a great way to teach the kids how to read. My daughter was so excited when she was able to read her first book all by herself.

I purchased the entire set $49.99, and was very excited to have my grandchildren begin using it. However, while the bought version was delivered to my Kindle, it was not delivered to my grandchild's Kids FreeTime Unlimited - the free version was delivered there. I called Amazon, thought they could help me get the paid version to show up in FreeTime Unlimited, but was told that it wasn't compatible. I need everything for my grandchild to be compatible and placed in the area that is safe and secure for children, with parental controls on, blocking them from web access and unauthorized purchases. I think the Hooked on Phonics app is an excellent educational experience for children. I would definitely buy the full version if it could be accessible in Kids FreeTime Unlimited. Instead, I did receive a full refund. Just puzzled about an app that's clearly for children, not compatible with the "kids" safe area on Kindle.

My son has been resistant, at best, to my efforts to teach him to read. But the little turkey just rocks and rolls along with this and sat down and read me 3 of the in app books the other day. I'm super proud of him and he he loves "playing" with this app. The educational approach of the creators is pretty much genius.

The description made it seem like you had more access to more lessons for free, but you only have access to one, or two maybe. I deleted it. You have to purchase lessons individually, which can be costly.

Let me first state that I think this this app is a big rip off. My 4 yr old niece downloaded it today to see what it was about as it was a recommendation after she downloaded starfalls Learn to Read, Starfall Free. I promptly undownloaded it after she handed me the tablet within the first minute because my app locker locked the app because of an in app purchase. After I unlocked the tablet I looked around in the app to see what had caused the in app purchase and the app locker to lock the tablet, and when I found out why I was shocked. I'm sure it would be a nice starter to help your kid learn to read, but you can buy phonics books in sets and learning stores for fairly decent prices and teach your kid to read yourself. When you download this app which is a free app and open it you find that they give you one free book. It set up in stages and each stage has several books that you have to unlock for a certain price and it start out on the first set at .99 each. So there are 12 stages and 36 ebooks and I think they go more expensive as it went down in stages. So you could in app purchase quite a hefty bill or your kid could if you are not paying attention to what they are doing before you finish with the end of this app. Or you can unlock all the content for 50 dollars, I'm not joking! There are so many better cheaper apps out there to help your kids learn to read and so many better options than spending 50 buck on an app. Take the time and teach your kid yourself and don't waste your money on this. I can not believe this was a Parents Publication Silver Award Winner.

This seems like it would be a great resource/tool for helping your little one to read. And I think it would be if I could afford all of the lessons. You get one lesson with this app. That lesson has three mini sub-parts. You have to pay for additional levels/lessons that are visible on the main page, which of course your little one will continually try to open, which will continually request you to make a purchase... Maybe one day; but not today.

bought the kindergarten hard copy program and didn't realize it didn't start with the sounds of alphabet letters. I bought this hoping it would but it doesn't. My 4 year old son enjoys both. I prefer the hard copy only because I want him to use less of the digital devices and get into actual books.
Both are well worth the price and within a week my son was reading short books.
