but as with any sharpener the mechanism wears down. This item says "cutterheads on heavily used sharpeners should be replaced every 2-3 years." I pictured "heavily used" as being used in a large classroom, however after 2 years ours wore out with only 6 people using it almost daily. You can buy a replacement cutterhead (no. 51151) here at Amazon for around $11 or $12. The key to a nicely sharpened pencil? Make sure that the pencil fits snugly into the proper-sized hole. If the fit is too loose, the pencil will sharpen unevenly. The standard-sized hole isn't always the best one to use.

This is my fourth manual pencil sharpener in a few years and I can't say enough good things about it! The first three I bought fell apart or wouldn't sharpen the pencils correctly and they would break the lead in the pencil as it was sharpening. THIS one sharpens every pencil perfectly every time! I homeschool my kids so we use this a LOT every day. I was a bit leary of purchasing this one after my experiences with the other three plus I didn't want to waste $17 just for another bad sharpener. I would HIGHLY recommend this one to anyone. It does the job it was designed to do. I have had this for about 3 months now and wish I would have bought it sooner!

I was excited to find a vintage sharpener like this for such an incredible price! It goes perfectly with the decor in my office and I love it as a decoration but I find it difficult to use :( the turning mechanism is not smooth and I need to re-insert a pencil several times during the sharpening process due to it getting jammed :( Now I'm back to using a plastic sharpener while this one sits beside my lamp looking pretty!

My parents have one of these that is 40 years old and works fine so I bought one. Unfortunately the mechanism is sloppy and the grinding blades get jammed in the drive gears. It seems like the company would have mastered the design of this simple machine. i think there has been too much cost cutting.

This pencil sharpener is the same brand and type as the one on the wall in my Algebra class. I like to use non-technical pencils, call me old fashioned! I will stand there day after day sharpening my group of 3-5 pencils for a satisfying point which this sharpener always delivers. The only time I've had breakage was due to the quality of the pencil, not all pencils are made equally. This sharpener is reliable and eco-friendly. Uses manpower to operate it, not precious resources like electricity!

I have one of these my Dad was given for Christmas back about 1965. This one is OK, but not really as good as the 1965 one. Problem is that the design has been owned by a succession of manufacturers, and everybody tries to make something a little more efficiently (read cheaper) and it's really hard to improve a solid design by making it cheaper.

This is a very disappointing pencil sharpener. The handle does not turn smoothly and the cutting blades often jam. This problem was exacerbated by mounting the sharpener against a vertical surface. I replaced this with a much cheaper, single-cutter pencil sharpener which works much better (but still not as well as the one I had as a kid!)

It works pretty good, not as good as the ones in school growing up. Make sure to have decent pencils, like Ticonderoga pencils. Those chinese packs of 10 for 99 cents always sharpen wrong.
