Amazon.com
Boasting an acoustically balanced wooden enclosure and an enhanced front-firing 3-inch speaker, the Sangean WR-2 tabletop radio offers the sound and features of a living room system in a cabinet that fits conveniently in a bedroom, kitchen, or garage. Any discussion of the WR-2 begins with its black wooden housing, which is rich in both appearance and tone. The cabinet's front surface features the speaker on the left side, a series of intuitively placed control buttons toward the bottom, and a generously sized LCD display in the middle with three brightness levels. More importantly, the cabinet teams with the 7-watt amplifier and the acoustic bass compensation system to add warmth and depth to the audio. Complementing the housing is Sangean's advanced RF/IF electronic circuitry, which picks up distant AM and FM stations and reproduces them with unmatched clarity, making music and even talk programs come alive.
Even though the WR-2 is advertised as an AM/FM radio, it offers much more than a standard digital tuner, including a Radio Data System (RDS) that displays short text messages on applicable FM stations, along with support for the Enhanced Other Network (EON) and its traffic information (available in certain regions). And unlike most tabletop radios, the WR-2 lets listeners adjust the treble and bass levels via the variable volume control. In its default mode, the rotary volume knob displays the volume level from 1 to 60. Tap it once, however, and it turns into a full-range treble control, and two taps creates a full-range bass control. Additional features include a clock with an alarm (radio or buzzer), an auxiliary input jack for connecting such devices as an iPod or MP3 player (both of which sound great through the speaker), a recording output jack, 10 memory presets that help you quickly find your favorite stations, and a full-featured infrared remote control.
A final bonus stems from the power backup function, which plays the radio for six minutes during a power failure (great for emergencies) and retains the memory preset and clock values for about an hour. The WR-2 measures roughly 9.5 by 4.5 by 6 inches (W x H x D) and weighs 5.5 pounds.

UPDATE: April 2016 - I've had this radio since December 2015 and have grown to be so disappointed in the mechanical quality. The sound is great - the design is great but it burns me up that at least several times a week if I go to turn up the volume, the radio's functions totally freeze up (and don't unfreeze without effort). Or I change the channel and it stops working. Unplugging it doesn't always solve the problem now. It's especially annoying when I hear, say, an interview and I want to turn up the volume and instead IT GOES OFF. I'm furious that I spent this much money on a poorly functioning radio. I read the negative reviews and thought maybe I'd be an exception. Well, that's obviously not the case. I'm very unhappy with it.
NOTE: The picture on the product page as of this date is of the discontinued older version! See my attached picture of the front panel of the current version 2.
It is a very attractive design.
The radio uses an internal AM antenna and the power cord is the FM antenna. The radio has connectors for external AM and FM antennas. I use it in a location that has very poor AM and FM reception. Even with the built-in antennas the radio has surprisingly good reception – about the best I've ever seen including Nakamichi and Boston Acoustics radios. I connected an external single-wire FM antenna and reception is excellent. I'll speculate that an external dipole antenna or possibly an antenna with gain would do even better if you are in an area with truly terrible reception.
Sound quality is quite good. Bass and treble tone controls give you some choice!
There are five preset buttons. They give you five presets each for AM and FM.
One alarm is provided and it can be used with a buzzer or any AM or FM station. Assuming a radio station is being used: The alarm is set using an onscreen menu that takes you through hours, minutes, frequency (once, daily, weekday, weekend), AM or FM, station or preset), volume. Push the alarm button for a few seconds and the menu starts blinking. Rotate the tuning knob to select a choice and push the knob to set the choice and move to the next menu item.
The time can be set automatically using the Radio Digital System (RDS) although in my area that does not work. I set it manually using the menu.
The display has 8 brightness levels including full off.
USAGE TIPS, mostly relating to the alarm:
Do you only use the alarm some days? Set it for a "once" frequency. The radio remembers the settings. When you want to activate the alarm just press the alarm button for a few seconds. When the alarm wakes you and you turn it off, it is inactive until you again press the alarm button for a few seconds.
Do you use the same alarm every day? Set it for "daily." After waking and turning off the alarm it will remember all settings and go off again tomorrow.
Do you only change the time and never want to change the AM/FM station or volume? No need to go through the whole menu. Set the desired time and stop pushing any buttons. The display stops blinking after a few seconds and the alarm is activated using your new wake-up time.
Design improvements needed:
Not a design change, but the tips above could be added to the instruction manual!
The tuning knob is shallow – it should stick out farther from the front panel so it would be easier to grip and turn.
When waking up the alarm can be turned off by pushing the blue power button or by pushing the alarm button (bottom row, third – radio or fourth – buzzer from the right.) A larger or more-prominent "alarm off" button would be nice.
The display really should auto-adjust brightness based on ambient light level.
Again, though, I strongly recommend this radio. The changes noted would just make it better – hopefully Sangean will see this review.

Further, in the two years we have owned it, I can recall NO MALFUNCTIONS----- it NEVER freezes, I NEVER have to unplug it, the light NEVER blinks, and it keeps SUPERB time. ( I am very fastidious about keeping clocks set perfectly and regularly check them for accuracy: it is on par with the clock in a GE Profile stove and is actually better than the clock in our Cuisinart microwave, which cost a lot more than this radio.)
I wonder if the negative reviewers are talking about this exact model.........or if they bought used instead of new.......or if they bought knockoff/bootleg merchandise from someone other than a licensed dealer.
In brief, we would buy it again. It has a solid, heavy body ( a promising indicator of quality construction ); full, lively sound (for something so small ); and all the features you would expect from a small radio---plus some. Yes, two speakers instead of one would be a small advantage, but then the size would be bigger. And the remote is flimsy ( we have never used that, so I cannot comment on its function). For what you really get with this radio, the price is a BARGAIN.

Update: For some reason the static is gone now and I am happy with the radio now. I like its features a lot and now that the static is gone I would recommend it for purchase. I want to upgrade it from 2 stars to 4 stars now . However there is no customer service at all, no response to my inquiries from the manufacturer
I spent days researching what radio to buy. I finally chose this because of the reviews. It was not a mistake. I wish I hadn’t spent so much time looking and just bought this immediately!
By far, the best AM/FM reception I have ever got with a radio!
Sound is amazing! Very loud, with bass and treble adjustments.
AUX in with my iPhone sounds just as good.
Stop reading this and just buy it! Don’t waste your time looking like me... It is AMAZING!
The only drawbacks are that their is no battery back up if the power goes out, you lose your settings. Unless there is a non replaceable battery that I do not know about. The menu is a little tricky to navigate, however this is only used very sporadically anyway.
Excellent radio, great "old school" look. Nice heavy weight to it.
Would buy again!
