I understand that the first batch of WR-12 radio's had issues. If I purchase a WR-12 from Amazon today will I receive "the new and improved WR-12
" that you reference in your comments post on Amazon reviews?
Hello all. This is Bob from Sangean America Inc.
I'm happy to inform you that we are now shipping the new and improved WR-12.
It now passes Sangean's stringent quality control. The FM tuning and audio problem found in earlier WR-12's has been corrected.
If you would like to swap your original unit with the new WR-12, you may return it to Amazon.com, or contact us. Please accept our apology for any inconvenience this may have caused you, and many thanks to our loyal customers.
Thank you for your interest in the WR-12.
Yes, all the units sold by Amazon are now the new and improved units.
Customer Service Rep
Sangean America, Inc.
My unit seems to function fine. The sound is clear and the radio locks stations in as it should. I have the WR-2 and WR-11. So far I like the WR-12 out of the bunch.
I am happy to report that I have none of the tuning or sound issues reported. The bass is a bit boomy and hooty (I expected as much from the small so-called sub-woofer), so I turned the bass control down about 1/4 turn to compensate. That's all it needed and the sound is surprisingly good! The radio section did not disappoint at all. It pulls in FM stations ~70 miles away with the built in antenna. The bundled external antenna improves reception marginally, but since it's only a wire maybe 4' long and not a proper areal I wasn't surprised. None the less it does make the difference between a marginal station and a useable one when the station is week. It would be really interesting to see far this could be pushed with a proper outdoor antenna.Read more ›
Update: Replaced the Sangean with a Tivoli which allowed me to do a side by side comparison. The Sangean has a better tuner despite the fact the dial is way off, but at low to moderate volumes the smaller Tivoli makes a nicer sound. The Sangean has tone control but still leave the mids very flat. The Tivoli lacks any tone adjustment but luckily has a very balanced sound. The dial is spot on and the geared tuner dial makes the quality feel a little better on the Tivoli.
Based on the recent positive review here and a Sangean rep's comments about improving the WR-12's sound and quality control, I decided to give the 12 a shot. I never listened to a "bad" 12, so I cannot swear mine is improved over the models others disliked; but the unit I received sounds good to my non-expert ear, and vastly better than the WR-11. I'm returning the 11 and keeping the 12.
Given other reviews I'm guessing most WR-11s are just fine, and according to Sangean's rep all WR-12s available through Amazon also check out fine. Just be aware that there have been problems.

Detailed sound, good stereo separation (if you listen at close range). Tuning feels more natural and selective, and AM music sounds better, than the smaller WR-11. Read morePublished 1 month ago by tryder
