I have wanted to use my iPad as my only computer on trips with my camera, but since I may shoot up to 100 GB of pictures, backup storage was a problem. I have a couple of 500GB drives and a Camera Connection kit to download pictures from the camera to the iPad, but how to complete the transfer to the drive was the question. Seagate has a 500GB drive with wifi connection to the iPad, but I didn't want to pay twice for a drive. I read about this item in "The iPad for Photographers" ($9.00 Kindle), but it was just introduced at that time. I ordered one on Friday and received it by mail on Monday.
There is an iOS app available in the App Store that is mounted on the iPad. It will also work with the iOS PhotoSync app and any FTP app, such as FTPOnTheGo.
The device includes a quick start guide and a power cord, which plugs into an Ipad power supply or similar 5v 2amp source. There are some complaints that a full adapter isn't supplied, but I think this was a smart idea. Anyone would have the iPad adapter and this saves money and eliminates another thing to carry.
When I turned it on,it worked instantly with the Safari browser on my iPad and I could easily browse the attached disk. You need to remember each time to use the Settings app in the iPad to connect the iPad to the iUSBport wifi signal, particularly if you have another local wifi (such as your home) normally remembered.
It took a little while to get it to work properly with the app and I had to ask a question about how to transfer files, but received prompt answers from Kelvin in customer support.Read more ›
As many of the reviews have stated you do need to install an app. When I went to download the app from the iTunes store the new app only works on iOS 6.1 or higher. My jailbroken device is on 5.11. Fortunately there is an older app with a different name but it does work on 4.3 and up.
Set up was easy to follow the directions. After letting the unit charge completely I plugged in a 500 GB external portable hard drive, that runs solely on the USB bus, it recognized the drive immediately and provided enough power to run the drive at the appropriate speed.
In reading the instructions I learned I did not need the app, rather I could run it through a browser. It does not have to be the Safari browser by the way. I tried running it through the browser by itself and it worked just fine. I then set it up to run through the app and it ran just fine that way as well.
I watched the movie Ted with the subtitles turned on and it ran flawlessly. I've been copied over some video footage that I had shot , and moved over to the drive much easier than I expected, although I did need to use the app to complete successfully. As I'm currently on the road and doing this away from the computer, I've not tried any of the workarounds or alternate methods described on the manufacturers website. When I return home I'll probably be more adventuresome and try cutting some video as well.Read more ›
Furthermore, I really hoped to move my iTunes videos to an external hard drive and be able to play them directly. Guess again you can not do this. All videos have to be played through their software or web interface, same with accessing other files. I still have not figured out how to save files from the iPad to the hard drive either.
I have over 20 years in the tech industry and a degree in computer sciences, this product is a great concept, but poorly executed. I hope that future revisions to firmware make it operate better.
That alone would have earned this product no stars (or the lowest rating possible) were it not for their proactive customer service. They quickly attempted to help me correct the problem & get things working properly. Ultimately, however, I opted for the refund.
