It is a bit pricier than some of the cheaper grinders for a reason. The first time I used it, I expected the consistency you'd get from your run of the mill grinder. I bought this as a replacement for some crappy (and not so cheap) sharpstone grinder that I had. When I opened it I was shocked at how fine my material was. I didn't think a simple handheld grinder would be able to get your materials to the consistency I wound up with. As for the unit itself, when you hold it in your hand you can tell that it is a heavy, quality made item. It has a very nice finish and looks great. Overall, it is a very nice piece that performs on an exceptional level and I doubt you'll ever need to replace it.
A few tips:
1.) After grinding up your material, turn the grinder upside down and continue grinding. DO NOT LET THE LID COME OFF. Your material will continue to be shredded into an even finer material.
2.) After grinding upside down, hold the grinder at a 45 degree angle, lid down (so that the edge of the lid is pointing down at the ground). Your material will pile up in the "corner" of the lid chamber. Continue to grind at this angle once again for an even finer material.
All in all, I do not recommend. You can do better with your fingers and/or a good pair of scissors.
Update 6/17: Ok, perhaps I was a bit harsh. After working with this shredder more and watching some online videos, I realized if you want a finer grind, you can simply grind upside down for a few turns to keep it in the grinding reservoir (Duh..), and then turn it back over so it falls through the holes into the catch vessel below. I still maintain that it's really expensive for what it is. A further criticism is that the kief catcher has such a fine screen that I hardly get any kief, but whatever..
