Editorial Reviews

On this second Real World release from The Creole Choir of Cuba, freedom songs passed down through generations of Haitian emigrants in Cuba are brought to life with vibrant harmonies, lilting melodies and rich, deep Caribbean rhythms. A hefty dose of Cuban flair creates a rich, soulful sound that evokes their proud history of resistance and resilience. The album also includes an original song written in the wake of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, where the Choir visited and undertook humanitarian efforts. The singers are all conservatory-trained musicians, but come from a shared historical background of sorrow and defiance that charges their sound with unparalleled passion. Santiman was recorded at Real World Studios in England, and produced by composer/arranger John Metcalfe (Morrissey, Blur, John Cale, Peter Gabriel).

I have mixed feelings about this CD. The voices were gorgeous and tracks 4 and 9 are beautiful. Some of the other tracks were annoyingly repetitive and after one or two listenings, I found myself skipping them.

Just phenomenal. I've never heard anything like it. Their voices are glorious & with few instruments in the background to distract, the sound is fantastic.
This is a *must buy the whole album* piece as well. All the songs are terrific.

If you like Haitian folkloric music, if you like Cuban music,t hen you will fall in love with this CD. Under the expert and competent direction of Emilia Diaz Chavez, the Creole Choir of Cuba (fomerly Desandann in Haitian Kreyòl - Descendents in English) has surpassed itself on this CD. The music is mesmerizing. The arrangements are superb and the voicies are just wonderful. A couple of years ago, I had the opportunity to see the group in concert and it is a whole new wonderful experience!. It is amazing to see how these second and third generation Cubans of Haitian descent have jealously guarded their Haitian traditions in Cuba where, incidentally, Haitian Kreyòl is the second spoken language after Spanish. They sing in Haitian Kreyòl as if they had been living in Haiti all their lives. The album is dedicated to Dalio Arce Vital who unfortunately passed away before the release of Santiman. This is a fitting tribute to his memory, for, he contributed mightily to the fusion of music from Cuba and Haiti, whom he considered his two beloved homelands.
