Additional to the impressionist style paintings, there are a number of oil and watercolors executed during Sargent's travels to places such as Turkey, Egypt, Morocco, Scotland and Spain. There are also copies after artists like Titian, El Greco Tiepolo etc.
This volume continues the high standards of documentation and research encountered in previous volumes of this series. The printing standard and quality of color reproduction are well above average. Warmly recommended.
What I did not expect - and have come to value - was the extensive text. Prepared by THE expert(s) on Sargent, it makes the book all that more valuable and useful.
This is not just a pretty book for your coffee table. This is solid scholarship.
initial idea through the stages of planning and research and then towards the final work of art. This book illustrates in many drawings and sketches Sargent's process as he considers his composition, colors and model pose.
Many of his sketches are not successful and you can see why he scraped ideas and how he built his final glorious masterpieces.
The illustrations are clear, the book is layout in a linear format and the accompanying text is historically well-referenced.
I suggest this and the other Sargent books in this series. They are a terrific historical reference to read along side the more gossipy book Strapless. If you love Sargent imagery and his painting style the combination of the two types of books will provide the artist or reader with
a lot of food for thought. I want the whole series for Mother's Day this year. Hint, hint, hint!
