She released two of the most-commercially viable songs in "Single Ladies" and "If I Were a Boy". There are not too many other songs on the album that are appropriate to be released as radio singles. It's doubtful that her base of urban radio will play most of these songs and pop stations probably won't either. I think at this point Beyonce is so successful (and possibly bored) that she is singing songs for herself and not the masses. She understandably has to challenge herself and grow as a woman and an artist, but unfortunately, this album is not a recipe for continued success. Not to say that the songs on the album are bad, it's simply that electronica and acoustic-styled music is not mainstream and is very hard to find on the radio, and thus people, particularly Beyonce fans, aren't used to it.
Anyway, I agree with the 3.5-star average rating that this album has gotten. Part of that star rating is due to the fact that you cannot ignore her extraordinary talent as a true singer, and not a "studio voice".
The songs I LOVE are "Smash Into You" (hands-down my favorite song on the album... maybe my favorite song ever by Beyonce), "Single Ladies", "If I Were A Boy", "Ave Maria", and "That's Why You're Beautiful". I also like "Satellites", "Ego", "Hello", "Halo" and a couple others. However, this isn't an album I can listen to repeatedly from beginning to end though like I could with the Dangerously In Love and B-Day albums. I'm a huge fan though, and it will be interesting to see what she does on future albums.
Beyonce is very talented and sings a great variety of songs here--from the upbeat rock songs to rap (i guess you would call it that in the song "Diva") to the more melancholy slower songs. i thought my daughter would be very disappointed in the slower songs and she has discovered that she loves those as much as "if i were a boy" or "halo". In fact, my daughter, 11 years old, loves Ave Maria.
Often I find that when i get an album there are only a couple songs that I like--but I would have to say that I like all but 2 of these songs. And even those, i don't hate--i could just do without them.
Highly recommend for the younger generation as well as those of us who are middle agers!!!
