Purchase options and add-ons

  • Provides observational techniques for uncovering nature’s clues hiding in plain sight
  • Includes maps, scientific figures, and illustrations
  • NOT A SPORTSMAN’S HUNTING GUIDE, as Sasquatch’s value to science is potentially ground-breaking
Bestselling writer and naturalist David George Gordon delves into the remarkable history of one of the most iconic creatures of the Pacific Northwest: Sasquatch. This new field guide introduces readers to the Sasquatch―also popularly known as Bigfoot―in nature, in myth, and in modern culture. Gordon explores folklore, testimonies and evidence, and modern day encounters. He pieces together the species’ physical features, behavior, and habitat, and suggests a “critical thinking” approach to the facts surrounding Sasquatch.

Whether or not you are the one to discover Sasquatch, The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual, will help you become a better observer of nature, more knowledgeable data-gatherer, and skilled in basic tracking and wilderness navigation. Becoming a proficient citizen–scientist is a step toward bringing this creature into the spotlight of the scientific community. And along the way The Sasquatch Seeker’s Field Manual will give you a deeper appreciation for the impact it has had on our daily life, ranging from Sasquatch garden pavers to frozen Yeti Yogurt.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Gordon’s book is a charming detour from typical science writing, and he applies scientific thinking to extraordinary circumstances with healthy skepticism.... He covers sasquatch lore with a thoroughness that is both surprising in volume and admirable in intent. -- Patricia Balbon ― SciStarter

Learn your prey before you go into the woods. Read it and take it with you when you are seeking the majestic Sasquatch, lots of clues on what to look for when in the wilderness, good reference for when you run across a Sasquatch in the woods to help you identify the real thing from your brother in a bad Halloween costume. Highly recommended for the SSS (Serious, Sasquatch, Seeker)

Author Gordon wrote a booklet in 1992 called Field Guide To The Sasquatch which examined the Sasquatch mystery in a basic primer which could be used in research areas mainly in the Pacific Northwest (the author seems to ignore reports from outside that region for some reason). This new edition expands on the original booklet by giving basic tips on field research as well as common sense tips for survival in rough environments. Also are tips on what to take in the field, the best areas to go, the best kind of food items that large predators can utilize and what kind of signs to look for of these creatures. Also there are websites listed that the newbie can go to, as well as an extensive bibliography of the best books to read on the subject and even movies and documentaries to watch. I would give this book a 9 out of 10, only because he does not give any credibility to sightings outside the Pacific Northwest.

Acclaimed science writer David George Gordon doubts Sasquatch’s reality but sincerely hopes it will be proven. Here he offers a unique and very informative guide to how citizen scientists can aid in the search. After a recap of the basic story, he muses on cryptozoology. He rejects the idea it’s a pseudoscience pursued only by kooks. He discusses field work, the needed tools and preparations, and the art of deciding where to look. Gordon includes everything from hiking safety to proper interviewing, along with often-humorous asides about topics from the tabloid headline “I Had Bigfoot’s Baby” to the suit for the film Harry and the Hendersons. He closes with a list of suggested expeditions sites and routes. Sometimes serious, sometimes tongue-in-cheek, this is a book for everyone who wants to find the elusive beast.

How does a veteran science writer, thoroughly steeped in the scientific method, write about something that (this is me, not David Gordon, talking) almost surely doesn't exist, but which many, many people fervently believe or hope does? With a sympathetic, interested detachment that carries doubters and true believers along for a pleasant walk in the woods--complete with indelible pen, waterproof notebook, Zoom recorder, GIS, plaster for casting footprints, and all the other necessary gear. David (who, let it be disclosed, is an old pal---I edited some of his first articles, back when neither of us had gray hair) avoids the insistent claims and careful sifting of evidence and alleged evidence of the usual genres of Sasquatch writing. Instead he tries to prepare readers, mentally and practically, to conduct a credible search. And to have some fun, on the trail or in the armchair.
If you haven't read his other books, you may not know that the man is one of world's great connoisseurs of the weird and wacky. My favorite aside in this book is "The Pangboche Hand," the tale of how, by substituting human finger bones, a British explorer stole a finger from the dessicated had of a supposed yeti jealously guarded in a Nepalese monastery. The actor Jimmy Stewart--George Bailey!--and his wife smuggled the finger to London in her lingerie. The paleontologist who examined it there thought it might be neanderthal. Years later its curators allowed a DNA test, which determined that the yeti/neanderthal was good ol' homo sapiens.
Happy hunting.
