Functions as a typical router, connecting to the internet provided by your ISP and broadcasting a wireless signal, enabling you to create your own network.
Connect to your existing network and amplify it. This enables you to extend the range of your wireless network – invaluable if you have a weak connection in a room far away from your router.
Create a wireless connection from a wired source. If only an Ethernet port or Ethernet cable is available, the router can connect to the wired connection and broadcast a wireless network that all your devices can connect to.
Connect to a device such as a Smart TV or video game console via an Ethernet cable. The Smart Travel Router can then be used as a wireless adapter, enabling the connected device to connect to the internet wirelessly.

My work frequently involves operating in the basement of hospitals all over the world. Usually, this means they either only have wired internet or the wireless signal is so low that it is unusable. No problem! Either I extend their existing wireless network or create my own. It is a great feeling to have all the contractors wondering how I am using my computer, smartphone, or just generally functioning and staying connected. Then I say, it my network. Then, I'm everyone's best friend. I know I have had up to 7 devices wireless connected to the device and no DHCP issues or other. Also, in a situation where outlet availability is at a premium, being able to power three of my devices with only one adapter is vital.
Provided wireless too slow? Usually the wired connection is faster and this router will keep up. You can have a faster WiFi network than those around you. It's really not necessary, but fun to brag.
The set-up and use is not exactly "plug and play". However, I prefer it this way. There is really only one step between you and your own network. But, by accessing the router itself and including that one step, Satechi has allowed you an amazing amount of options for your network. You can choose to broadcast, assign IPs, block devices, really almost anything your home router can do. I think it is highly simplified, but without loss of control or capability.
I’d say that the user interface needs to be updated/simplified for novice users. If you know what you’re doing, then you can tweak almost anything. I’m pretty comfortable with the concepts so I was fine. But someone who is used to working with Apple products might find the interface a challenge. Actually I suspect that many people buying this previously used Apple’s Airport Express (old form factor). This is a logical replacement for that product but doesn’t have the polish.
I hope in future update they really work on the UX for administering the device. It looks and feels very dated. I also hope they introduce a way to know if you’re running the most current firmware. You can see what version you are running (after digging a bit) but there’s no indication that there’s an update available. Also the method for updating the firmware is a bit clunky. You need to basically factory reset your device before uploading the new image. I think there’s a way to export your settings and then read them in again but it’s not obvious and this method doesn’t work if you’re using an iPad as the browser.
I can’t fault their support. I emailed them asking about firmware versions and got a quick reply (several actually) letting me know how to check the version and what the most recent version number was. Nice to know that there are actually people responding.
I had no issues using the USB port to charge my iPhone or iPad.
The physical aspects of the device could be tweaked in future iterations as well. I had no issues with the plugs in Japan or Australia. For those of you who have been to the UK, you know that most plugs have an on/off switch as part of the plug. This unit is big enough that I couldn’t plug it all the way into the wall because the unit hit the on/off switch. It still worked. Although not an extremely bulky device, I feel it could be slimmed down a bit.
Overall, however, I’m impressed with the product. And never having heard of the company before, I would have no hesitations about buying other products from them in the future.
*Pros: The durability and different options to use in different countries and the fact that there was 2 USB outlets to charge more than one device at a time.
*Cons: It is a bit bulky and would hang off the outlets.
HOWEVER, the con is not even that big of a deal. I really don't mind it's size because it is holding different types of prongs inside. I would recommend this product to anyone who is traveling abroad and planning on going to multiple countries as well. It's an all in one package! :o)
