Pros: Solid device. Cosmetically flawless. The color and material match my MacBook perfectly. The ports all appear to function. Pass-through charging works fine.

Cons: Something I noticed that is not specifically pointed out in the product description is that the pass-through USB C charging port works ONLY to power the MacBook. It does NOT pass data through the USB-C port (such as from my USB-C to Ethernet adapter) or charge devices in the other direction (such as my Galaxy which I connect to my computer with a Micro USB to USB C cable). This is a bit irritating and disappointing, especially as it isn't pointed out in the product description.

The hub is also a little wiggly when plugged in. This isn't a product flaw, but rather something that you've got to expect. The thing's being held to the side of the computer by a single connection - of course it'll wiggle a little. Not a con, just something to be aware of when using.

Three stars for a solid, good looking product. I'll bump it up to five if the product description is changed to more accurately describe the true functionality of the USB-C port.

I bought this hub because it offered a combination of connections that suit my needs. I wanted to be able to read SD cards from my camera and be able to connect an outboard hard drive or memory stick.

I matches the color of my MacBook and connects solidly. The performance seems to be good.

There are a few caveats. I bought the hub along with an Urban Armor case. They are shown together on an Amazon page as "frequently bought together." The may be bought together, but they cannot be USED together because the thickness of the case prevents the hub from plugging in to the computer. Not Satechi's fault. In fact, the fit without the case would not be good if the connector was a little longer.

I also have an Apple adaptor the provides a charging port an HDMI port and one USB 3 port. Not as versatile as the Satechi. I guess I'll be taking the case on and off a lot.

I have read that a reviewer had an SD card damaged by the hub. It is important to realize that the card is inserted with the label down. The picture of the hub shows two cards with the labels up. This misleading as you have to flip the cards over to insert them. While I did not damage my card on the first attempt, I can see how it might happen.

This hub offers a combination of connections that Apple does not and I like its design.

2 stars for aesthetic design and that it does let me use my external HDD and memory card at the same time.

That being said, it's not reliable and honestly seems unsafe. While it does provide pass through charging, if you have your HDD plugged in as well, make sure you don't unplug to power cord when your MacBook is done charging. removing the power cord will turn off the hub and disconnect anything attached. It's a shame that the hub can be powered off the MacBook by itself and it can be powered by the pass through charger when plugged in, but it can not switch from being powered by USB-C pass through to being powered by the MacBook when the cable is unplugged.

It also gets dangerously hot. Like so hot that it burns when you hold it. I don't trust it being plugged into my Mac and I certainly don't trust plugging my External drives or memory cards into it for an extended period. I'm certain that if I continue to keep using it the internal circuits will eventually fail from being melted.

Don't waste your money here. They did a fantastic job with the aesthetic design and it matches my MacBook perfectly, but it's not worth potentially damaging anything it's plugged into by way of melting.

UPDATE 0301: I attempted to download the contents of a microSD card using the card reader and it scratched the card rendering it unreadable, effectively destroying the data. The card contained videos of family vacation in Hawaii. Thanks for nothing Satechi :-( DO NOT buy unless you're looking for an SD card wiper. Booo.....

------------
I bought this hub for two purposes: 1) to download media from my SD and ultraSD cards in the field, and 2) to connect USB hard drives. So far, it's only meeting one of my two needs.

The card readers and power pass-through work well, and I've been able to connect spinning hard drives via USB, but I have several SSDs in external USB enclosures (like Envoy from OWC) that don't mount when connect to the Satechi USB ports. Maybe the enclosures draw too much power? I'd love to know more about how much power the Satechi USB ports provide.

I'm _really_ hoping that the 512GB MyDigitalSSD (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N0V4JG2/) works with the (fickle?) USB ports on this device. Update: this POS doesn't work with either the Samsung T1 or the MyDigitalSSD.

Looks great and quality as almost just as good. Color is just about spot on with the space grey. Unfortunately my G-Drive time machine drive will not work plugged into this hub. Its not getting enough power. Even with the hub and pass thru power plugged in, it will not back up. I just get the battery icon on the screen with the amount charged and nothing else. The G-Drive will only power and work properly when plugged in directly to the USB-C port using the adapter. Otherwise the hub works great with low power peripherals.

It gets warm quickly and the fit is a bit loose with just a thumb drive and power plugged in. I feel like with anymore weight in it, the hub would get loose enough and loose connection.

Edit: Ended up returning. It runs too hot and doesn't work for what it intended for (use of external HDD and power).
