Editorial Reviews

12" will include a rare Renaud Monfourny photo of Morrissey, will include "You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side," the opening track from Morrissey's seminal 1992 album Your Arsenal, which was produced by the legendary and hugely influential Spiders From Mars guitarist and arranger Mick Ronson (whom also co-produced Lou Reed's original "Satellite Of Love" and its parent album, Transformer). Also featuring "Satellite of Love (Live)." In addition there are two previously unreleased tracks, "Vicar In A Tutu (Live)" and "All You Need Is Me (Live)" recorded live in Hyde Park on July 4,2008.

The release is a timely tribute and homage to one of the most important influences on Morrissey's life and music. Morrissey's version of the song was recorded live at The Chelsea Ballroom at the Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas on November 25, 2011.

Morrissey's new single is a live cover of Lou Reed's Satellite of Love. It's a great choice by Morrissey and a very high quality recording of his performance. I wasn't sold on the song at first listen, but after playing it back, I'm liking it a lot. One has to wonder if it a studio version will appear on his next album. Up next is the first track (and one of the best) off his 1992 Your Arsenal album, which is getting a remastered release in 2014. The version here is the new remastered track, and if a reissue of the remastered album gets a full release on vinyl, I'll certainly be adding it to my collection. The sound quality is excellent and we'll no longer have to track down the original vinyl, which is very hard to come by and very high priced.

The B-side features two more live tracks: a spirited version of Vicar In A Tutu, proving Morrissey still takes pride in performing his old Smiths songs. Another high level of energy is heard in All You Need Is Me, which plays as a seamless transition between the two live tracks (they were both recorded at the same venue).

A rarely seen cover photo taken by French photographer Renaud Monfourny from his 1991 photo series, "Morrissey and the Dummies", 180gram heavyweight vinyl, and two unreleased live tracks (including one of a Smiths song), all add to the appeal of this worthwhile 4-track vinyl single. There were two other songs issued with this single release. A live version of Mama Lay Softly on the Riverbed is part of the digital download version of the single, and a cover of Buzzcocks' You Say You Don't Love Me is found on the 7" picture disc single.

In 1976 the young Steven Morrissey wrote a letter to Melody Maker in which he stated that,"British punk rock is second to the New York equivalent, in that it does not possess the musical innovation". He has consistently professed his love for Patti Smith, the New York Dolls and has reminisced at an earlier age of 12 he went to see Lou Reed in concert, on his lonesome. The recent death of Lou Reed has led to a host of tributes and it is natural that Morrissey has also put out such a record. He has regularly played "Satellite of Love" from Reed's "Transformer" album in concert most recently at the 2013 Nobel Prize Ceremony in Oslo. This rendition was recorded live at the Chelsea Ballroom in Las Vegas two years ago. Being Morrissey he gives the song his own signature stamp, changing the line "I love to watch things on TV" to "I cannot stand the TV." However aside from this it is a respectful workmanlike cover of a great song but in truth unless you are a Morrissey completist you would be better advised to head to the Reed original or for that matter the version by The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain which is stunner. Its good in addition to hear the blistering remastered "Your gonna need someone by your side" from "Your Arsenal", similarly the live version of "Mama lay softly on the riverbed" is a nice powerhouse cover of the track from "Years of Refusal". Roll on the next album.

Beautiful graphics on each side of the vinyl. The B side features the same photograph, but a close up of the manikin's face. What a fantastic release of the live version of Morrissey's cover of Lou Reed's Satellite of Love. And while it is also nice to have a version of You Say You Don't Love Me (live) too, I'm even more of a fan of the remastered You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side. Classic! The vinyl comes in a clear cover in order to highlight the photographs on both sides of the Disc.

I was at the show where the live recording took place, so clearly I had to get this! Framed it along with the show ticket.
Looks good on my wall next to all my other Smiths/Morrissey vinyl :-)
