As a simple lay practitioner I really don't have much to add to the insightful comments of senior teachers like Joseph Goldstein and Shaila Catherine already featured in reviews here. I have long been impressed by Ven. Anālayo's erudition and obvious depth of practice, but this little gem of a book, while it builds on all of his previous work, stands alone for its user-friendliness and concise clarity. It's the best meditation manual I've seen in 4+ decades of Buddhist practice. If I had to choose just one or two books to read for the rest of my life, this one and a selection of the suttas such as Bhikkhu Bodhi's "In the Buddha's Words" would be my choice.
With this text and his forthcoming one on mindfulness of breathing Bhikkhu Anālayo is clearly intent on providing the most practical tools available for those interested in coming as close as possible to the Buddha's own practice. His entire body of work up to this point has clearly had that same intention, but here he sets the footnotes and complex references aside and offers up the pith essence of his decades of study and practice for immediate use by serious practitioners whether lay or monastic. What a stunning gift.
