Top customer reviews
1) Is it a quick project? NO!
2) Did the manufacturer provide thorough & easy to follow assembly instructions? YES!!!!!
While it was a lengthy project, taking the better part of a Saturday to put together by myself, dust it and fill it up, it was NOT difficult. It would be helpful - especially for certain parts, to have a second person to help - but not necessary. I am a woman in my 30's and I had absolutely no problems getting this cabinet assembled. I do agree with the manufacturers suggestion to assemble on the cardboard or a blanket. I have vinyl flooring and had to assemble in a different room than the cabinet actually belonged. I was able to set the cabinet upright and easily push it across the floor since it was on the blanket and then moved each end off the blanket to it's rightful place.
There was also a review about how the doors did not go on "square" but the manufacturer has that covered! There are thorough instructions on what screws to adjust to make the doors go up or down; in or out; side to side. HAVE NO FEAR - YOU CAN DO THIS!
I really wanted to be able to fit brooms & dust mops in the cabinet but I saw in another review that is not possible and they are correct. You could potentially disassemble a sweeper and possibly fit it in, but I have plenty of other things I can store in there and will find another solution for my broom/vacuum.
Very impressed with the stability and sturdiness of the cabinet and shelving. This is just an overall great buy in my opinion and I would highly recommend to anyone who needs some extra storage space for the kitchen (like me) or really any room. I'm uploading a couple of pics I took to show just how much a person can fit in the cabinet :)
Once the finished cabinet was assembled and leveled, the cabinet is not very stable. They supply a "Safety Bracket" with mounts on top and is supposed to attached to a wall stud - but is far too short to accomplish this (plus is too weak looking). Sauder is telling you that they don't expect the cabinet to be stable without some help. To stiffen the assembled unit, I attached a sheet of 3/8" plywood on the back with self drilling screws, attaching the plywood to both outer vertical sides and the center vertical divider, and that did the trick. After attaching the plywood sheet with just a few screws, it was necessary to drill some small locator holes thought the back and the plywood in order to hit the center divider with the plywood attachment screws, as the divider is only 5/8" thick, and easy to miss with the screws. I used a 12" long 1/8" bit for that.
Once these operations were completed, the only complaint I have about the Cabinet (besides door alignment) is the shelves inside the smaller door. They are a little too shallow to fit either CD cases or DVD cases, as other reviewers have reported. I'm going to try removing the black "stops" and installing some horizontal support bands to keep CD and DVD cases from falling out of the shelves.
Overall, it's decent for the price, and Sauder makes as good a kits as anyone (I've purchased others). It's just that with 5/8" thick material, it's hard to make a 6ft tall cabinet stable. The only other alternative is to either buy a cabinet from stores and have it delivered. But I was not close enough to any store, being in small town, and the delivery charges alone on something this large would have exceeded the price of this kit - not to mention the price of the cabinet you bought, also several times the kit price.
