Each veneer is labelled with the common name, the type of cut, and the country of origin (e.g., wenge, quarter cut, Brazil; white birch, quarter cut, US and Canada; etc.) This sure beats walking the aisles of a fine wood lumberyard with a picture book in hand. I really like this ID kit. The only thing they could have added would be a re-closeable bag or plastic box. The inexpensive bag that the kit comes in won't stand up to much use and is not re-closeable.
This particular packaging of the kit is offered by Amazon through Peachtree Woodworking for $35.99 with $8.99 shipping added. At this writing, Amazon also offers the same kit through Rockler for $29.99 with free shipping (33% less). If you decide to get one of these ID kits, it's worth your while to see which fulfillment merchant is offering Amazon the best deal as the price differences may be significant.
This kit is a great companion to Rick Peters' Woodworkers Guide to Wood which is out-of-print, but used copies can be found through Amazon partners for a few dollars. 2016 update: There's a new book out this year on wood identification and use by Eric Meier (on sale on Amazon or wood-database dot com) which is even better than the Peter's book as far as photos and data of a wide variety of species.
Great kit. Very useful in wood selection. Recommended.
You're better off going to your favorite supplier and selecting the pieces you want. Keep scraps from projects for reference.
Also note, just because a species is available as veneer, doesn't mean that it's available in lumber form.
My pack of 50 samples included 1 duplicate. Nine species were repesented 2 (5 species) and 3 (4 species) times with various cuts like flat sawn, quarter sawn and burl.
A bit over-priced for it's usefulness (unless you are doing a lot of veneering).
There were some interesting samples and I'll probably start learning how to do veneers, so in that aspect, the marketing part worked.
Also YOU MUST provide your own container to house them in as they come with nothing.
Accurate description ... but PAY ATTENTION... if you do not reinforce these.. HANDLE WITH ABSOLUTE CARE... as they will break easily. They are cutting from a VERNIER. Thus THIN... Thin... THIN. Got It?

I used this wood sampler for making bentwood rings.
The selection is nice but not all wood bends well for rings.
Most cuts were fairly thin... Read more
This is a great sample. All the wood is labeled which is nice. It had a good variety, with only a few repeats. Only about one or two were damaged/cracked/chipped. Read morePublished 1 month ago by Brad
Just what we were looking for - we use them to make book markers. They are thin and perfect for our projects.Published 5 months ago by Amazon Customer
Each piece is labeled with wood named. I've used it several times to identify pieces of wood. Only had one piece that had a crack. This is normal for wood, no big deal. Read morePublished 9 months ago by Bert Holden
