This is a useful set of veneers for selecting the exact wood you want. Each of the 50 veneer sheets is 8 1/2" X 4" x approx. 1mm/.04"- which is a large enough sample for my woodworking. In fact, the sheets are large enough that one could put a finish on half and still have enough plain wood exposed to make a comparison.

Each veneer is labelled with the common name, the type of cut, and the country of origin (e.g., wenge, quarter cut, Brazil; white birch, quarter cut, US and Canada; etc.) This sure beats walking the aisles of a fine wood lumberyard with a picture book in hand. I really like this ID kit. The only thing they could have added would be a re-closeable bag or plastic box. The inexpensive bag that the kit comes in won't stand up to much use and is not re-closeable.

This particular packaging of the kit is offered by Amazon through Peachtree Woodworking for $35.99 with $8.99 shipping added. At this writing, Amazon also offers the same kit through Rockler for $29.99 with free shipping (33% less). If you decide to get one of these ID kits, it's worth your while to see which fulfillment merchant is offering Amazon the best deal as the price differences may be significant.

This kit is a great companion to Rick Peters' Woodworkers Guide to Wood which is out-of-print, but used copies can be found through Amazon partners for a few dollars. 2016 update: There's a new book out this year on wood identification and use by Eric Meier (on sale on Amazon or wood-database dot com) which is even better than the Peter's book as far as photos and data of a wide variety of species.

Great kit. Very useful in wood selection. Recommended.

Realize that these are veneer samples from a veneer supplier, so it's somewhat a marketing tool. If you are a frequent visitor to The Wood Database, you'll know that visually identifying wood is an educated guess at best. What this is more useful for is selecting options for a project or presenting to a customer (although veneer is a bit fragile to handle much).

You're better off going to your favorite supplier and selecting the pieces you want. Keep scraps from projects for reference.

Also note, just because a species is available as veneer, doesn't mean that it's available in lumber form.

My pack of 50 samples included 1 duplicate. Nine species were repesented 2 (5 species) and 3 (4 species) times with various cuts like flat sawn, quarter sawn and burl.

A bit over-priced for it's usefulness (unless you are doing a lot of veneering).

There were some interesting samples and I'll probably start learning how to do veneers, so in that aspect, the marketing part worked.

The wood species veneer assortment is useful to both identify wood species and also help my clients decide on the look/wood species they want for custom furniture. It would be very expensive and time consuming to assemble a set of veneer samples on one's own...this kit is a great deal.

I find this product very useful for confirming wood species. The peices are big enough to get a good sence of what the wood looks like and this kit includes all the regular types of wood and many exotics.

These veneer strips are beautiful! One of the things I've done so far was make wooden rings (jewelry) and they turned out well! The veneers were packed and shipped appropriately so none of the veneers were damaged when I received them. Next, bracelets and napkin rings!

This will help anyone that works with wood to recognize the different spices of wood and where it come from. Its a little brittle so be careful.

I really do love these... they are unfinished and I'll likely add a clear finish to one side of each... to see how that looks.... or might do it to a 1/2 of one side and affix them to foam core or something to give them just a bit of substance and rigidness... because they are microns thin and could easily be damaged.
Also YOU MUST provide your own container to house them in as they come with nothing.
Accurate description ... but PAY ATTENTION... if you do not reinforce these.. HANDLE WITH ABSOLUTE CARE... as they will break easily. They are cutting from a VERNIER. Thus THIN... Thin... THIN. Got It?
