The concept has potential. The author has potential--the first created riveting characters.
But the whole series needs a quality editor to clean up the mess, hone the story telling, and make the world building CONSISTENT. And, of course, to get rid of cliffhangers, which are a sign of a weak author, unable to provide complete stories or unwilling to trust the reader will return if the book is good enough. At least I got it free so only wasted time. Can only imagine fury of reader who squandered limited book budget on these!
I am the first to admit I am basing this on only a portion of the first book, but if you are reading reviews before considering starting this trilogy, I want to tell you what I wish I'd read before I began.
The theme throughout the first book is mixed - you have a princess who goes through such traumatic events and is depicted as resilient and strong, yet she's constantly being rescued - the damsel in distress with a big strong man to save her just when things look hopeless. I'd be OK with that if it were a key in the love interests meeting and beginning their journey of romancing each other…but…different men every time. And when a new one comes along, he wants to rip the head off the previous suitor.
Just when I'd start to settle into the story, Clara would get abducted and almost raped. And then she'd get rescued. And then something weird would unfold like…finding out about her true family heritage. Really?
The world is an interesting concept and I'd like to see how it all came to be that way, but I'm not willing to finish the remaining two books in this set…free or not!

Strange for a woman writer to make the women all victims who constantly get captured in various ways, sometimes in unbelievable acts of stupidity.
It ought to be called The Stupid Women series.
Inside there is is an interesting larger story trying to get out. Having read these three books I know that if the unnecessary kidnappings, two of the kidnappings were essential to the story, were taken out you'd have one book tightly written and really good Sci Fi.
I'll finish most books no matter how bad they are but this one defeated me. It's not just the crazy illogics of the social system, I could tolerate that just about, it was that plus the utter ignorance of science. Thing is if you're going to use science (and let's get this straight this is supposed to be an alternate on this world) you better use something that at least makes some sense.
If you've seen the 1950s film adaptation of Day of the Triffids, you'll know what I mean. And we are talking salt.
Learned some interesting things about oysters though.
