Savage Messiah: How Dr. Jordan Peterson Is Saving Western Civilization Hardcover – January 21, 2020
Purchase options and add-ons
A fascinating biography and in-depth look at the work of bestselling writer and psychologist Dr. Jordan Peterson, by award-winning author Jim Proser.
Who is psychologist, professor, bestselling author, and YouTube personality Dr. Peterson? What does he believe in? Who are his followers? And why is he so controversial? These are among the many questions raised in this compelling, exhaustively researched account of his life―from Peterson’s early days as a religious-school student in small-town Canada to his tenure at Harvard to his headline-making persona of the present day.
In Savage Messiah, we meet an adolescent Peterson who, scoffing at the “fairy tales” being taught in his confirmation class, asks his minister how it’s possible to believe the Bible in light of modern scientific theory. Unsatisfied with the answer he’s been given, Peterson goes on to challenge other authority figures who stood in his way as he dared to define the world in his own terms. This won Peterson many enemies and more admirers than he could have dreamed of, particularly during the digital era, when his nontraditional views could be widely shared and critically discussed. Still, a fall from grace was never far behind.
Peterson had always preached the importance of free speech, which he believed was essential to finding life-saving personal meaning in our frequently nihilistic world. But when he dismissed Canadian parliament Bill C-16, one that compelled the use of newly-invented pronouns to address new gender identities, Peterson found himself facing a whole new world. Students targeted him as a gender bigot. Conservatives called him their hero. Soon Peterson was fixed firmly at the center of the culture wars―and there was no turning back.
With exclusive interviews of Dr. Peterson, as well as conversations with his family, friends, and associates, this book reveals the heart and mind, teachings and practices, of one of the most provocative voices of our time.

About the author

Award-winning and bestselling author Jim Proser grew up as the fourth of five sons of nightclub impresario Monte Proser and film actress Jane Ball in New Hope, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
His new book from St. Martin’s Press, “SAVAGE MESSIAH; How Dr. Jordan Peterson is Saving Western Civilization” (launching January 21st, 2020) is the biography of one of the most controversial figures of our time – Dr. Jordan Peterson. In the foreword by nationally syndicated radio host Dennis Prager, Prager writes, “The subtitle of this biography is “How Dr. Jordan Peterson is Saving Western Civilization.” It is not overstated. That is how important Jordan Peterson’s life and work are.” Just days into pre-sales, the book ranked as #1 New Release in Canada for biography.
Jim began his professional writing career at age 15 as a city reporter for the Lambertville (NJ) Beacon newspaper and went on as a journalist to write for the Bucks County Courier Times, Investor’s Business Daily and National Review Online. He has written screenplays for film and television producers including 20th Century Fox Television, Showtime Networks and numerous independent producers.
His first book, “Mr. Copacabana; An American History by Night” has begun filming as a multi-hour television documentary series, is in negotiations as an extended dramatic television series and is the inspiration for an authentic re-creation of the original Copacabana nightclub in Tampa, Florida. The book reveals the outrageous life story of Jim’s father, Monte Proser, creator and operator of the iconic nightclub, and his involuntary business partnership with Frank Costello, the infamous “Prime Minister” of the mafia.
His second book, “I’m Staying with My Boys; The Heroic Life of Sgt. John Basilone, USMC” was published by St. Martin’s Press and awarded the United States Marine Corps Commandant’s Recommendation in 2011. It was the source material for the subsequent documentary film written and directed by Mr. Proser. The book and documentary have also served as the source material for speaking engagements to the United States Naval Institute in Washington DC, the University of Northern Idaho Writer’s Symposium, Bowdoin College Advanced Literature Studies, the Coeur D’Alene Charter Academy and numberous civic organizations and secondary schools.
His third book, “No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy; The Life of General James Mattis” was published by HarperCollins publishers and released on August 7, 2018. The book has achieved the rank of #1 in its category and #17 overall on amazon.com. He has been interviewed about the book on “The Story with Martha MacCallum” and “Fox and Friends” on the Fox News Network.
Jim lives in Sarasota, FL and spends his days working on his next book and writing inflammatory political posts for his blog at jimproser.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 18, 2020The world greatly needs to learn more of and about Jordan Peterson. This book does quite a good job of telling his story, and I enjoyed it very much. Thank you, Mr. Proser.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2020Several disclaimers first: I am not any kind of expert reviewer. I am a fan of Peterson's teachings. I have been following him since the Bill C-16 flap which is what first got my attention. I have watched a great many of his videos and have read his "12 Rules For Life", and I am a member of a large women's group all of whom support Peterson's work.
With that intro, I give the book a 5 star rating for the following reasons:
1) Because it is a very good chronological story of how this now controversial man came to his world view. It tells how he sought to understand man's inhumanity to man and the great capacity for evil that resides in us if we let it overwhelm us.
2) This biography fills in the missing pieces as to how Peterson, who has clearly helped so many people and been such a good influence on his students, male and female, and people of all ages ages and backgrounds became such a controversial figure just for telling scientific truths. I wanted to know how it happened that a man who taught such basic, good rules to live by, as well as essential psychology necessary to understanding the human condition, could be ganged up on by media, particularly female media personalities.
3) The final reason for the 5 stars is to counter the obvious troll ratings which began appearing the minute his enemies became aware of this book.
As for the book itself, for me it is a really well done, simple biographical account of how Dr. Peterson came to see the world as it was, how it is, and how it can be. And then it clearly lays out the forces behind the efforts to destroy him for telling us about it and cautioning us so we don't proceed to repeat the horrors of the past.
I look forward to reading more of Jim Proser's work starting with his book "No Better Friend, No Worse Enemy: The Life of General James Mattis".
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2022I have read one book by Dr. Peterson - 12 Rules for Life - and watched various YT videos. It is clear to me that every adult needs to become familiar with Dr. Peterson and his ideas about how to improve ourselves and how mainstream academia is a cancer (my words) on the body politic of the Western world. Others have pointed this out but no one has so completely explained the why and the how. This book is a biography of Dr. Peterson and it is a real eye opener. In many ways, he has had an incredibly difficult life and he has overcome his challenges. I cannot think of anyone more educated, more thoughtful, more capable of giving facts rather than opinions and more trenchant about the world we live in. We are very lucky to have him. Others have noted a few minor errors in the book (e.g. Trudeau not in NDP) but that is not relevant to the main story.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 22, 2024This book is presented in a very understandable and interesting way.
It showed not only Dr Peterson's achievements but allowed me to get to know Dr Peterson in a very unexpected human way.
I really liked it.
Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021I read this amazing book over the weekend. It tells the story of Jordan Peterson presenting a psychological portrait of the man and his ideas, his academic, political, and personal journey through his own depression, his daughter’s juvenile arthritis, his academic work as a psychologist at Harvard and U of T, and currently a public intellectual and warrior for truth in our world. I was totally blown away by the book and its sweeping view of our recent political and academic history. I had heard about Peterson and had even met and filmed him when he was in Montreal for a public lecture and award but this book really opened my eyes as to who he is and what he has to offer. Thank you, Jim Proser, for your passionate and compassionate writing.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 27, 2020I'm still working my way thru the book (p. 229). So far it is informative though seemingly biased from a conservative prospective as evidenced by certain assessments and value judgements, but what really gets my goat is when the author of a major biographical work gets simple, relatively common knowledge facts dead wrong. On page 229 he asserts that Justin Trudeau "ascended quickly to the leadership of the NDP."!!!! ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!! Trudeau is and always was with the Liberal party! How do they let errors like that get published? C'MON!!! Stuff like that does little to help the reader trust the author with the rest of the content.
Finished it! Came away with a strong appreciation for who Jordan Peterson is, the struggles he and his family has gone through, the richness of his worldview, and the challenges of confronting an opposing worldview with all the human darkness that entails (counter expressions of anger and hatred). Why we humans have to be so arrogant, billigerent, intolerant, and unkind in the midst of trying to figure our way through the world is beyond me.
Oh, and one other spot where I have to seriously question the author of this work. When describing Jordan's early years of struggle with nihilism, the author writes about Nietzsche stating that he "wrote that Christianity was an antidote to the despair, the nausea, of meaninglessness, . . ." WHAT? This assertion runs counter to everything I've ever heard about Nietzsche. My limited understanding of Nietzsche is that his "antidote to despair" was the Ubermensch, the Superman that would rise above the weak and failed Christian worldview and ethical system. Nietzsche saw that the demise of Christianity WOULD LEAD TO DESPAIR, and the Ubernensch was the way forward, but I've never heard it said that he saw Christianity as the "antidote". Nietsche was not a fan of Christianity at all and I'm baffled how the author could assert that he saw it as an "antidote".

Shows how shallow our society is. Well written and again proof of the strength of people like Peterson who are nor afraid to step up.

I never realized who Jordan Peterson was and what he had to offer until I read this book. It is an analysis of Peterson's psychology dealing with his own depression, his academic career at Harvard and U of T, the heartbreaking story of his daughter's battle with juvenile arthritis from the age of two and is based on a reading of his academic work, intimate interviews with his associates and family within the historical context of his time.

If you want to know how uneducated "professors" became experts of life in our times here in North American continent, this is a right book. For me immigrant this book was very educational. To understand the corruption of our universities and public education.

Briefly:
• Seems to do fairly balanced justice to the basic facts at the time
• Small details about Canada are sometimes incorrect, which will annoy Canadians
• Some sections approach the hagiographical and will offend more scientific sensibilities
• A more straightforward, no-nonsense biography written by someone more intimately acquainted with both the good professor and his homeland would be better
• For those who have been following Dr. Peterson for some time, the book will present nothing new, although it might help point out some early resources you hadn’t considered (the scholarly articles, CBC interviews, etc.)
