Savage News: A Novel Hardcover – April 9, 2019
Purchase options and add-ons
Be noisy. Natalie Savage grew up hearing these words from her beloved father, who admired Walter Cronkite so much he named the family dog after him. Natalie—who spent her twenties missing out on life’s benchmarks—finally sees her efforts pay off when she’s assigned to cover the White House for her network, ATN. The problem? The position is only temporary, a test to see if she has what it takes. She has always relied on her grit, her principles and her news sense to gain success. But now her competition is a twenty-six-year-old spoiled frat boy who got his big television break by eating raw animal parts on a reality show.
Of course, he’s winning.
Natalie, along with her scrappy production team, has to navigate ratings wars, workplace sexual harassment and an international political crisis in order to prove herself. But the closer she gets to achieving her dream job, the more she wonders if it is worth all the compromise.
Timely, funny and smart, this juicy debut is the perfect tonic for readers contending with today’s politics and the #MeToo movement. Natalie Savage will be sure to join the ranks of our favorite fictional heroines as she figures out that having it all doesn’t mean giving up everything she stands for.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 17, 2019I’ve been following Jessica Yellin on Instagram for months now and am completely enamored with her honest, straight-forward, easily understandable news stories and posts. She’s just amazing. I value all of the free content she’s given me during this time, so of course I had to support her when her book came out.
I haven’t read fun fiction in a long time. I’m usually reading self-help or parenting books so “Savage News” was a breath of fresh air. It is fun, timely, relevant, and a pretty quick read. You can really picture everything in the book happening today. Throughout the book I kept thinking it would make a great movie!
Natalie Savage is a great character I want to see again and again (and James, Matt, and Dasha)! Jessica, please turn this into a series!!
And YOU buy this book!! It’s perfect for the beach or pool this summer, or anytime really.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2020Ms. Yellin spins a good yarn, good enough that I would probably read a second novel by her. My disappointment was that this wasn't quite ready for prime time -- that is, perhaps eight times I found typos (such as a instead of at) or faulty attribution punctuation, things one almost never finds elsewhere in a professionally published work.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 8, 2019Literature about relationships is plenty, but about jobs, careers, which too often become our primary relationship especially in early and mid adulthood, are few and far between. Savage News is a rarity, equal part pathos, equal parts comedy and satire, equal parts earnestness at its most charming. What do real journalists do? Seek truth and tell truth to power. Natalie Savage's journey into the looking-glass of today's sound and fury--aka a job in television--will educate, illuminate, break your heart and galvanize you. Wildly entertaining, too, and there's even a love interest so endearing and sexy you'll be looking for him in all the best familiar places long after you finish the book. I'm blown away by the talents of Jessica Yellin. The book is also great on audio, read by the author. And follow her news coverage on Instagram @jessicayellin And no, the author and I are not related. I'm just a huge and grateful fan.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019I love following Jessica Yellin online and appreciate how she breaks down what is happening in the world to make it easy to understand and factual (#newsnotnoise). That said, I was super excited to read her first novel and this book was such a great read! Once you pick it up, you will not be able to put it down! Set in the cutthroat world of cable news, Natalie Savage is a character you can really relate to as she is smart, ambitious, witty and you are rooting for her to become her cable network's next White House correspondent. The book is smart witty and it brings the perfect amount of levity to the current political climate. I found myself cheering her on and smiling at every turn. You will love it!

- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2019Absolutely loved it! It's well-written, the plot moves fast, and the story is hilarious though very relatable to our time. I've found myself saying "OMG" so many times as I was reading the first half of the book. Let's just say many anecdotes mentioned happened to me or friends. If you're a woman and have worked in finance, consulting, tech, or of course the media, this will probably ring even more true to you! But a fun read for everyone too.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 17, 2019I love Jessica Yellin - get a lot of news from her and have heard her interviewed a few times, so I was really looking forward to reading this book. I will say that in its favor it is an easy read beach book for summer relaxation. But it is hard to relax when the protagonist is so unlikeable that you are frustrated every minute of reading the novel. Of course we don't expect (or want) perfect protagonists but the main character in this book takes so long to learn from the hundreds of mistakes that the author outlines for the reader every line of the entire story that it is distracting and annoying. I hope Jessica Yellin continues to provide balanced political news but in the future I will stick to her non-fiction content only.

Me gustan los gatos y el chocolateReviewed in Spain on January 16, 20235.0 out of 5 stars Un libro sensacional que merece la pena
