This is probably the most darkest of Parker's Spenser novels yet. Without giving too much away, you'll see Spenser being Spenser, but you will also see him go a bit over the edge. I liked the development between Spenser and Candy and I grew to admire Candy as well. She's a driven character with some pretty big goals. She's like a sleuth in her own way. The title could be referring to the state that Spenser was in at one point or it could be referring to L.A and Hollywood in general and how Candy felt it treated her. Normally I would say this is a must read like most of Parker's early Spenser books, but this time I am going to say that this one has an even higher priority.
Was sad Robert Parker died a few years ago, but have been impressed with Ace Atkins' follow up.
