Honestly, I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. I started it a few months ago, and wasn’t into the angry, violent vibe it opens with. I’m not into really dark romance where people get off on pain, and I was afraid that’s what this would be. But after having read a completely angst free, super sweet romance, I was looking for something a little grittier, so I decided to try this one again, and I’m so glad I did. Asher may be angry at the beginning, and he and Levi may push each other’s buttons, and they do fight and push each other around physically, but this isn’t actually a very dark romance. In fact, once they start giving into their attraction to each other, most of the fighting between them becomes slightly aggressive foreplay in the form of horsing around.
One of my favorite things in romances is when the characters are honest with each other, and so even though Levi and Asher initially see each other as the enemy, I love that they’re still honest with each other first about their confusion about how they are reacting to each other and then their growing feelings and attachment to each other.
I think Steele did a good job of showing how surprised they both are by their attraction, how inexplicable it seems to them (even if, later, they find out others aren’t really all that surprised by the turn of events), and then the gradual change in their relationship—the growth of trust and respect and love.
Despite how angry both Levi and Asher are at the beginning of the story, they both turn out to be kind, loyal, sweet men, who just got caught up in hurt feelings and team rivalry. I’m finding myself wanting to go back and reread certain passages to see their relationship evolve all over again. And I love that the epilogue is years in the future. I like how aspects of their lives are revealed through what they are doing—there isn’t an info dump feel to it.
If you are looking for a sports, enemies-to-lovers, NA, mm romance, I definitely recommend this one.

Then, the undeniable attraction between the two... well, that brought this book to another level.This is definitely a character driven novel with a strong rivalry that goes back and forth. I'd say it's low on the angst, but this book didn't need angst to be good. The enemies to lovers trope was strong enough to keep you needing more. And, those steamy scenes... 🔥 🥵I listened to the audiobook and highly recommend it. It was narrated by James Joseph and Will Watt. If you enjoy listening to men with an English accent, then you won't be disappointed with this one!Happy Reading! 💙
