There are few things that could be worse than being stranded on a deserted jungle island in the middle of the South Pacific with hardly a chance of ever being saved. At least you have 6 of your closest friends with you. Well, 5 anyway. Make that 4…3…2. Crud.
I guess there are worse things after all. The island isn’t deserted.
A little bit of a departure for Gifune, who usually writes more on the darker side of psychological fiction than a straight out “horror story” such as Savages. Yes, the darkness is still there. Just cocooned in a b-movie shell. And it works. What appears to be at first, stock horror movie characters, becomes something deeper as the story progresses and we find out what each of the characters are really made of. Some from the inside out. Literally.
Overall an enjoyable and well written Predator-style monster romp a la Gifune. 4.5+ Amazon Stars
I loved the premise, I liked how the subtle danger of the survivors themselves, matched and almost overshadowed at times the danger coming from the predator.
This was a really fun and quick read with very intense and we'll imagined characters, an easy five stars!
And I couldn't help but notice an excess of spelling and grammatical errors that the folks at Sinister Grin Press should have picked up.
Suffice it to say I cannot recommend this title at all.
So, the cover reminded me of one of those 1970's disaster flicks. Since I love those, I downloaded the sample. Soon enough, I was enmeshed in a tale of people who are stranded on a deserted island. It's clear that strong personalities are at play and that unexpected dangers would soon bring things to a breaking point.
The sample ended and I simply couldn't push 'buy' fast enough. I had to keep reading.
This is violent, intelligent fiction. What happens on the island is completely unexpected and brings it beyond the horror and thriller tropes you might expect. In addition, Gifune pulls no punches when it comes to his characters. Expect to be shocked.
This was an exciting, one night read. I would never want to be stuck on that island, but I sure loved reading it.
Excellent fiction and I would happily read the author again...and again, and again!
