Editorial Reviews

Three-time Oscar-winning filmmaker Oliver Stone brings to life this ferocious, sexy epic. In a glittering California beach town, two best friends’ innovative marijuana business has come to the attention of the ruthless Mexican Baja Cartel. As a seemingly unwinnable war unfolds around them, they’re forced to take part in a savage battle of wills to save the girl they both love. Starring Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Aaron Johnson, John Travolta, Benicio del Toro and Salma Hayek, Savages is “a stylish, violent, hallucinatory thriller.” (Ty Burr, Boston Globe)

I enjoyed all 132 minutes of this film, although I was reluctant to rent it at first based on some of the negative reviews here. It was one of the better films I've seen in a while. Without getting into the plot (do we really need long, amateur interpretations of the plot?), it was also better than what I expected after viewing the trailer. If you're considering renting it don't hesitate. I'm not recommending purchasing it since it's not the type of movie someone would watch more than once. The entire cast did a great job of making this movie highly entertaining. The supporting roles played by Travolta, Hayek, and Del Toro were superbly done. Most of the negative reviews seem to be from people having higher expectations from Oliver Stone, or from having read the book, but I was simply looking for something worth watching. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

This is a fun movie full of guilty pleasure and degenerates. It explores the full spectrum of stereotypical freaks: hippies, sexy dumb blondes, military badasses, corrupt officials, pot heads, Mexican drug lords, Mexican women, nerds and more. This is very much an action movie of cat and mouse, who's gonna outwit who back and forth. There's lots of color, sex, drugs, violence, bad script and bad acting, psychedelic choreography/editing. I'm not comparing it against the book or other Oliver stone movies. Just comparing it against other drug/action movies. And this is one fun ride! If not a long one too!

The acting was good around even the woman who's name escapes me and I don't really care enough to look it up, was pretty good. But the problem with the story is that it expected me to care about these drug dealer's plight and being endangered. I wasn't. Not in the least. I stayed with the movie because I am huge fan of Benicio Del Toro and to a much lesser extent, John Travolta who in my biased opinion those two stole the movie and were the only true highlights of this rather weak "drug" movie.

Benicio Del Toro shines as the selfish, conniving main muscle for drug lord, Selma Hayek. He is a bit awkward but truly heartless and somebody that you can safely call a surviving rat in every sense of the word, A real creep of a guy that you really can't help enjoy Del Toro do what he does best. If he wasn't in this movie, I can't imagine myself finishing the movie. His scenes are the ones that contain the more graphic, bloody scenes.

I honestly didn't care if these drug dealers got caught, swindled their way out of handcuffs, shot, strangled, stabbed or were blown up in a boat, car or restaurant. I wasn't emotionally involved and the movie did not provide anything new or informative where it could at least keep me interested on that level at least. There is very little action, very little drama, and yes the token black friend is the first to die...lol, and it is not even a horror movie!

If you are into the drug culture perhaps this movie would be a good way to waste time but for me this movie bored me to the point where it took me two sittings to finish a movie...that doesn't happen often. Two early sex scenes that show completely nude male buttocks but the woman is somehow covered in the right areas...should have been enough of a warning to know that this movie was going to suck.

It's a modestly budget low key movie,

Blake Lively, John Travolta, and Salma Hayek(HOLY COW IS SHE HOT!), amongst others, star in this extremely violent, sexually charged(understatement), highly controversial thriller! This is a ferocious, sexy epic that never stops with the action! This reminds me a little of Breaking Bad on AMC but this movie is a LOT more controversial. Be prepared to be shocked at the ADULT content! Two friends in the marijuana business attract the attention of the Mexican Baja Cartel and it becomes VERY violent very quickly. The war that starts is one they know they cannot win. However, the Cartel kidnaps their girlfriend and then it gets personal. The Boston Globe calls this movie "a stylish, violent thriller". Rated R is an understatement due to excessive violence, nudity, sex, drugs, and language.

The trailer had me intrigued and I like a few of the cast members. Before I saw the film here, I read or skimmed through the book. The film and book are related, but there are some big changes, and this is one time if you have invested your time in watching the film and looking through the book, that you ask yourself, "Huh?" at the film's conclusion.

I watched the first half and thought it was better than the book, but the second half went in a different direction and felt very strained. I knew what I was getting into when I chose to rent the film - an implausible plot, some two dimensional characters and beautiful scenery. But as it was finishing up, I felt letdown. I'm not bloodthirsty, don't like savage murders, but do think a cartel would function a bit differently than the one portrayed here.

So, would I recommend it to others? No, probably not. But if the trailer sets you up and you feel compelled to see how it all ended, then by all means rent the film and prepare to disbelieve some of what you see and hear.
