Whiteside spends the bulk of his book detailing how to save money on taxes. While taxes might be an afterthought for some, a patriotic duty for others, and a necessary evil for the rest, the fact is that taxes can massively erode your retirement savings and keep you working towards a goal that moves farther and farther away. He goes into the importance of not ignoring taxes and how to not only shelter your money from taxes, but make money in a way that you owe less taxes in the first place.
There is no crazy tax loophole abuse that would make a CPA's head spin. It's just an explanation of the different types of IRAs and 401k's, the differences between them, and how the pros of one type might be the cons of another. This isn't just him laying out a bunch of generic facts; he goes into great depth with calculations that show not only the power of avoiding (not evading) taxes, but how one type of tax-advantaged account might give you different results than the others and how you need to do your own calculations to get the results that work best for you. The book is very heavy with examples, calculations, and graphs that illustrate his point and show how much money you can earn by saving money on your taxes and letting it compound over time in tax advantaged accounts that invest your money in income-producing assets such as stocks or mutual funds.
If I had one complaint about this book, it's that there really isn't any advice tailored to people who don't make that much money. Hypothetical examples he gives usually involve couples making six figures. While that in no way invalidates any of the financial advice he gives (you simply won't be able to max out your 401k AND Roth IRA at the same time), I would have liked to have seen some tax advice especially tailored to the under-$40k a year crowd.
That aside, this book's biggest crime is that it is ONLY $2.99. I hope people are buying this by the digital truckload because the author has just doled out much better and more comprehensive financial advice than any professional I've ever dealt with. He makes the different types of accounts easy to understand, illustrates simple points using comprehensive calculations, and makes the seemingly-difficult subject of managing money one that anyone can learn and understand. And most importantly, he talks about WHY it's important to make and save more money. Not from a numbers perspective, but from a philosophical one: WHY is money important? This is a very important question to be explored, believe it or not.
The book never ventures too far away from teaching you how to save money on taxes, and while earning money from the stock market and side ventures is mentioned, he doesn't really go too into them (not in the way he details how to minimize your tax burden). I hope that this isn't Whiteside's last book, because I would love for him to elaborate more on those topics. But I would heavily recommend this book to anyone as a starting point to someone who is developing a retirement strategy and wants to know how to minimize their tax burden (or who doesn't know how much of an impact taxes are having on their retirement savings, in which case this book is even MORE of an eye opener).
And it's only about 76 pages, so you have no excuses for not reading!
5 stars. Amazon won't let me give 6.
The last few chapters bring everything together and wrap things up nicely. If you are just starting out with an interest in changing your life for the better, this book is a great place to start building that foundation.
Overall, I give this book 4 stars. It digs into the issues/topics with depth and substance but not so much that you need a degree to follow along.
Many know of the need to start investing as soon as you can, but don't exactly grasp just how important of a role time plays in doing that. DJ does a great job of using simple to follow math to show how saving, and saving early can help you get to the goal you have.
The best part of the book, in my opinion, are the chapter summaries. Packed in those summaries are actionable tips you can use to hit the ground running at investing and doing so in the most advantageous way possible to you.
