This volume gets into the grittiness a bit more that goes along with travelling the woods and battling loads of bad guys. There is a perfect balance of journey and action elements that keep the pace fresh. The one thing that I find conflicted on is the amount of logical thought in this series. I love it, and at the same time wonder if it takes away from it as well. It seems like every character is completely rational and has a logical solution to all the problems. Like I said, I still love it, but it is something I noticed that stands out a bit.
I love the descriptiveness of the internal conflict and emotions Leena goes through. "She glanced at her wandering hands and shivered with the realization of what she had been doing. Strands of hair clacked together hollowly around her head. Would she ever feel clean again? She checked a scream of disgust within." It's quotes like these that make me feel like I am going through the same things Leena goes through and helps immure me into the story. I look forward to the next installment.
I definitely recommend reading this series, you wont regret it.
I agree with the previous reviewer when they said it's tricky to plan and execute a good series. The writer has to create enough room for growth while maintaining the edge of thrill and anxiety in the reader to spur us to want to know what will happen next. McLaren does a masterful job at plotting his characters and their sub-stories while staying true to his foundation, Leena.
I am so hooked on his series, I've already begun book number three!
