AM Arthur writing paranormal? I had no idea what to expect. I knew I enjoyed this author's contemporary, but would that flow over into another style genre. Whew...it did! I really enjoyed this book and am literally counting down the days until I can get my hands on book number two.
In this world, there are three classifications (all men)...alpha, beta, and omegas. They are not true shifters as they don't shift into animals. Omegas are the lowest of the classes...basically incubators for the children. They have zero rights or identities. They're basically slaves.
Braun is a rarity....a 20 year old omega who hasn't gone into his first heat and is still unmated. He's terrified of mating. His alpha father and his brother's alpha are both incredibly cruel men and he can't ever see trusting someone like that to hold his life. But then he meets Tarek.
Tarek is everything opposite of what Braun has known an alpha to be, but it's still almost impossible for Braun to extend his trust or affection. What if he's wrong?
This is a hard world for Omegas and to a lesser extent the betas, but I loved getting to visit it through AM Arthur's writing. I cannot wait for book #2. It's about Braun's brother who's been through the most horrific three years of his life. I imagine his book is going to be incredibly emotional. I cannot wait.
If you enjoy mpreg/non-shifter worlds, I highly recommend this story. I really liked it.
Braun Etting is an omega stuck in the cruel world of the alphas. Omegas are treated as inferior property to do with what you will. An omega must defer to their alpha, alphas must give permission for others to speak to their omegas, omegas are mere breeding vessels, there is no law against an alpha 'disciplining' their omega...Braun wants nothing to do with alphas. His father resented him and his brother because both were born lowly omegas. When Braun's father dies he is sent to a halfway house that are supposed to be 'safe' for unmated omegas. One night Braun witnesses something he wants no part of...so he runs.
Tarek Bloom is an alpha constable who doesn't believe in the way Omegas are treated. He doesn't see them as inferior but he has yet to meet his omega mate - until the day he runs into Braun at a mutual friends apartment. He recognizes his mate right away but he has a long way to go to convince Braun that not all alphas are abusive toward their omega.
A they navigate the laws and restrictions placed on them by society, the men grow closer, forming a love that goes beyond the mating bond.
