In August of 2021, the US committed it’s biggest military failures in decades when we handed the keys of Afghanistan back to the Taliban leaving, not only our own citizens, but thousands of Afghans that helped us to the mercy of the brutal rapacious Taliban regime. This will be forever burned in many of our memories as the images of Afghans clinging and falling off of the outside of airplanes trying to escape Kabul. While the federal government played a “keystone cops” game of evacuating “every one of our citizens and allies that want to leave” to safety and away from the Taliban, an unexpected group of former American military and other citizens banded together to help rescue as many Americans and Afghans as possible with invaluable support from a few unexpected groups such as Franklin Graham’s Samaritans purse, Glenn Becks Mercury One, and the UAE’s royal family as well as hundreds, if not thousands, of average concerned Americans.
This book was written by one such former Marine that felt compelled to overcome his own demons of PTSD to lead the charge to rescue an Afghan family that he had worked with for years as well as thousands of others—personally returning to the country at one point to help pave the road for innocent families to escape. Spoiler alert, as with the broader story of Afghanistan, the book does not entirely end in happy endings. It is an incredibly emotional, anger-provoking, and inspiring story that I highly recommend.
