Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 4–8—Reading this book is an extraordinary experience. It has an elegant layout featuring ornamental lettering, watermarks, and gorgeous photos; were it not for the delightfully exuberant text, it would be a stately coffee table book. But kids will giggle about the central role of scat or, as Montgomery often writes, "poo," in the research of snow leopards' habits. Children will be swept up in the buoyant account of the journey through Mongolia led by Tom McCarthy, conservation director of the Snow Leopard Trust, in search of the elusive cat known as the "ghost of the mountain." He has devoted much of his life to studying these animals and persuading their human neighbors of the importance of their survival. Montgomery's enthusiasm translates well to the page and will have readers cheering for the entourage as they attempt to spot a snow leopard. This slender book abounds with information, including stories of McCarthy's rare, powerful past encounters with the cat, as well as zoological and cultural sidebars. Bishop's trademark stunning photography fills out the book with breathtaking views of the extreme environs of Central Asia and warm portraits of the charming people who live there. Author's and photographer's notes aren't typically as engaging as the main text, but the reflections of Montgomery and Bishop on their experiences with McCarthy's crew are eloquent, integral parts of the book. A great way to learn about a spectacular animal and its habitat.—Alyson Low, Fayetteville Public Library, AR END

Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop have produced a beautiful book about an expedition with scientists who study and protect snow leopards in Mongolia. Nic Bishop's photographs take us along on the expedition. They capture the generous nature of the people and Mongolia's vast sense of scale -- a scale that makes you realize that there are very few snow leopards out there. Sy Montgomery's text drives the story. It brings out the excitement, the suspense, the frustrations, the challenges, and the perseverance of the scientists. Much of scientific research is like chasing a ghost -- elusive. This is well reflected in this outstanding and highly recommended book.

This is a travelogue of a Western biologist and conservationist in Mongolia trying to track highly elusive and rare snow leopards. Despite its target age of 4-8th graders and the arresting cover image, there are very very few images of snow leopards in this book - either a 3/4 image of the head and shoulder, or a small snapshot of the researcher with a tranquilized leopard. The focus is on the research process, people, culture, terrain. The back cover of the book is much more a reflection of the focus. So, it was a bit disappointing for my 2nd grade child who adores this animal. The reality is, snow leopards are rare and hard to track. The book reflects this. It's a reality check. But if you are seeking a picture book of snow leopards so you can really see what they look like, their proportions, what their cubs look like, how they hunt or feed or socialize... this is not your book. I checked out http://www.amazon.com/Explore-My-World-Snow-Leopards/dp/1426317034/ref=lh_ni_t?ie=UTF8&psc=1&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER which has many more photos and more of an overview of snow leopards in general... but much less challenging text and not as much of a conservation message.

This is an interesting story about the scientist who collected samples of the scats that the snow leopard left behind as well as putting radio collars of 3 or 4 cats. It was hard for him and the group to see the cats up in the mountains for their spotted fur coats blend right with the rocky surroundings and they do not move. It is interesting how the locals live and their housing and cooking and their way of life.

I loved the photograpy but wish they had been able to see a snow leopard in the wild on that particular excursion. I liked the cultural information and photos of Mongolia and the people that live there.
