Have you ever wanted to run away from your troubles to some idyllic small town where folks will befriend you and value you for your unique skills?? Well, that's basically what happens when Grace flees back home to the UK after 4 years of living in California with her hubby, whom she's found has cheated on her.

Grace lands in the town of Saffron Sweeting, a small village outside Cambridge where many US biotech companies are relocating. Her knowledge of Americans from her time abroad comes in handy, helping the locals make their businesses more Yank-friendly, while also helping Grace get some of her confidence back.

As an American who has been an expat myself living in a British territory, I really liked all the British terminology, discussion of UK treats, and the discussions of Brits'/Yanks' different personalities/mannerisms. A reallly well-done, debut novel.

[Note - if you avoid self-pubbed/indie/small press books because you think they are chock-full of typo and formatting problems, I just want to add that I didn't notice a single typo in this book. It's well written and beautifully edited!]

Don't let the cover dissuade you from reading Saving Saffron Sweeting by Pauline Wiles! This is a superb book and the main character is a woman called Grace, not a dog.

Grace is British but she and her husband live in the States. She's a designer, but when she finds her one client is sleeping with her husband, Grace crosses the ocean back home. There, she finds a job in the quaint town of Saffron Sweeting.

She also catches the eye of a handsome man, even though Grace's husband is still begging her forgiveness and trying to win her back. There are several eccentric people in Saffron Sweeting and Wiles does a great job of describing the town and it's inhabitants, bringing them to life. Grace is a strong character who I really wanted to see land on her feet, but she always manages to do that. I just wasn't sure how her love life was going to transpire, and I'll leave that for you to find out. If you like some humor with your romance, with great writing and clever characters, pick up Saving Saffron Sweeting!

If you're a fan of Hallmark movies, you might like this book. The writer is good at phrasing and punctuation, and I appreciate that. It's getting pretty rare. The description of British customs and phrasing was fun. And I always like descriptions of small English towns. But the plot dragged after awhile. The main character discovered that her husband had cheated on her and moved back to England on impulse. She settled in a small town she hadn't even heard of before. There she proceeded to find ways to help her new town financially. She didn't volunteer these ideas, but people pleaded for her help. That seemed a bit odd. Small-town people don't usually plead for outsider help, especially from a young outsider. And I got tired of the main character's brilliance at identifying ways to help her new town while still showing complete denseness concerning her own life.

This was a debut chick-lit novel by Pauline Wiles, of which she should be very proud. The story focuses on saving not only Saffron Sweeting, a (fictional) small village in Cambridgeshire, in danger of losing its traditional landmarks to greedy developers, but also the marriage of a young interior designer, Grace, whose husband's one-off drunken indiscretion rocks the foundations of her marriage to the core.

Grace and her husband, James, are living in Silicon Valley in the US. When she discovers he has been unfaithful to her, she flees home to the UK and finds a small, cosy, pretty little village in Cambridgeshire in which to lick her wounds. She finds herself working for an estate agent run by Amelia--herself not a stranger to errant husbands. As chance would have it, Grace finds herself making the most of her interior design talents, when the effervescent Amelia pushes her into active village life...which also blows a certain handsome young property developer, Scott, into Grace's path. Teetering on the `rebound' tightrope, can Scott help her forget her rat of a cheating husband, or does her history with and love for her ex provide too much competition? And can Saffron Sweeting haul itself into the twenty-first century and defend itself against greed?

Wiles has certainly picked all the right ingredients for this chick-lit novel, and the result is a crisp, clean, witty, and well-devised book. She has portrayed some colourful and entertaining characters (all of them believable), and Grace is a strong and very likeable protagonist.

A very commendable first novel. A professional edit has been overlooked and would certainly upgrade it from 'commendable' to 'excellent'. Lack of attention to some editorial areas were just a little jarring, but it was enjoyable nevertheless. Hopefully, this promising author will address this, if not with this novel, with any future projects, which I would be happy to read.

Okay, I am an Anglophile. I was predisposed to love this story about the British couple who emigrate to the San Francisco area, have problems, and split up. Grace brings her knowledge of American ways back to a fictional Saffron Sweeting, a town near Cambridge. She is a self-taught novice interior decorator, and gets a position with a local realty firm as its expert on American needs and wants. Things get rolling. This enjoyable book has wonderfully drawn characters, an adorable English village, a dog who strays, lovers both worthy and not so much so, and friends old and new. Prepare for lots of snacking and a nice cuppa induced by lovely food at the charming bed and breakfast and deftly depicted bakery. All told, Grace grows up a bit, and true love prevails.
