I loved the book – the characters, the story, the romance, the suspense. I can’t wait to read the next book in the series!!
The only thing I would say is that the romance side was a little wrong for the time period, and for the characters involved. I saw Eliza being very cautious about her feelings with everyone she loved (her brother, her "butler," her lady's maid), people who have been there for her and that she knows and trusts. Yet, with her new spy partner and love interest, it just takes her a couple of days to let it all out. I found it to be unrealistic. Even if you have that feeling of knowing someone and feeling comfortable around them (which she said multiple times). I did like the back and forth and innuendos they had, but I felt it didn't go with the characters and the time period. I still enjoyed their teasing each other. I wish the progression of the romance had built up slowly, and that way build more anticipation and more guessing on the readers' part.
I would have also liked for the spy part to be more developed. I think there was so much more that could have been done with it.
However, I would say that for it being a first book, Laura Beers shows a lot of promise, and I will be definitely purchasing the sequels.
You know it’s a good book when it is really late at night and your eyes keep wanting to shut and you finally have to force yourself to put the book down so you can sleep.
The main characters were easy to like and were not annoying at all. I love that it was a clean romance novel, one I can and will recommend to my 17 year old and not have to worry about sex or bad language.
I will definitely buy her future novels and look forward to when that time comes!
Eliza’s unique photographic memory leads her into a life of espionage, harrowing escapes and love. Set in 19th century Europe, Lady Elizabeth (Eliza) and Lord Benedict Sinclair work together, though for separate purposes, to stop the criminal, Aaron, a murderer and a peddler of flesh. Their reliance upon one another naturally draws them together, igniting an abiding romance.
Beers captures the reader’s attention and holds it throughout; smooth, fast-paced and involving. An excellent read.
