William B. Patrick is an author who works in many genres and has three books from BOA Editions: We Didn't Come Here for This, a Memoir in Poetry(1999) These Upraised Hands (1995) and Roxa: Voices of the Culver Family (1989), which won the 1990 Great Lakes Colleges Association New Writers Award for best first work of fiction. Patrick has received grants from, the Academy of American Poets and the National Endowment for the Arts among others. He is currently a member of the faculty of Fairfield University's Master of Fine Arts Program in creative writing, and acquisitions editor at Hudson Whitman/Excelsior College Press.

Heartbreak and Heroism, up close and personal

Saving Troy is an emotionally powerful, gripping and exhaustively researched work of nonfiction. Patrick's diligence shows the heroism of these men without unnecessary dramatization and the heartbreak of it without descending into cynicism. Daily tragedies, interdepartmental feuds, firehouse cooking commentary---by the end of the book, I felt like I knew a lot of the characters. I felt like I'd lived alongside them. The unflinching look at their persistence in the face of constant trauma gave me an enormous appreciation for what they do.

Chapter Five, in particular, was tough to get through. I suspect each reader will walk away from this book with their own section that affected them specifically. I was happy, toward the end, that one of the more miraculous cases of saving a man's life got it's full due. Honestly, the world needs more books like this.

The humanity of Firefighting and EMS

Mr. Patricks book reveals one of the elements that those of us in the services usually hide behind the mask. That of being human and still facing tasks that many others will never have to face. Many of the current and past efforts of TV and Movies have tried to show the glory side, the side that shows everything working out to the betterment of all, Unfortunately they also have done a great disservice to the people who are doing the job. They depict the people involved as being able to disregard the human side of themselves and ignore anything that would injure or destroy that part of each of us. Mr. Patrick on the other hand has attempted, and succeeded in large part as an "outsider", to look through our eyes at the reality that will never make the movies. The pain and anguish of losing a fellow member, of attempting to console those left behind when a loved one passes on. The outright self deprecation each of us faces when we feel that we should have done more, when in fact we had already done everything possible. He shows the sleepless nights and the many small ways that grief and pain get dealt with inside the firehouse. I highly recommend Saving Troy, As a Firefighter/EMT myself it is a great book, however I do caution you to keep some tissues handy.

I also ask those of you who can, to support the fine Ladies and Gentlemen of your local Fire or EMS Units. Even a simple gesture like saying Thank You or bringing someone on the line a cup of coffee or a cold drink is very much appreciated. If you have the desire to do more the opportunities are there. Just be prepared to lose a bit of yourself from time to time.

William Patrick's Saving Troy is a tour de force of reporting from the front line of emergency fire and medical services in the embattled city of Troy in upstate New York. Having spent over a year riding with a platoon of the Troy fire department, Patrick describes the dedication of the fire fighters and paramedics with a vividness that's consistent with his other accomplishments as both a poet and a screen writer. Once a thriving industrial metropolis along the Hudson River, Troy has since devolved into backwater cauldron of joblessness, corruption, violence, and clapboard firetraps, and Patrick portrays Troy's ongoing crisis with the honest clarity of a native son. Whether detailing the desperation of a schizophrenic street prophet, the working class moxie of the fire platoon, or the often grotesque circumstances of impoverished death and tragedy, Patrick's empathy and keen sense for real life dialogue makes for an unforgettable page turner. This book is an excellent book full of the everyday work that firefighters and paramedics have to do.
I had borrowed this book from a friend as I am from the city of Troy, NY. I liked it so well I purchased it for
my future grand son in law, as he is into real life reads. I was so very interested to find out as I read this book, that I
actually knew some of the firemen in this book. It is amazing some of the situations that these workers get into and how hard they do work.
I would definately recommend this book to anyone. It is well worth every penny.

As a retired firefighter, and living only a half hour from Troy, I can relate. This writer kept your interest with every page. Only took 2 days to read as it was hard to put down at times.

Stories are told through an outsiders eyes so it is a fair assessment of what goes on in the daily routine of a firefighter.
