OK Soooo Maxx, and Logans story continues. (well concludes) Logan has gone to fulfill his lifelong dream of pro fighting with the big leagues. And Maxx and "The Kid" are left behind so to speak. Logan is relocated to SoCal, and Maxx is left with yet another hard decision to make. Will they both continue to be stubborn and pig headed? Or will they finally realize that things only really work out if they both talk, listen, and get over it? ROFL.
This final book in The Senses was a wonderful tear jerker, with the usual Logan and Maxx tension, tempers, passion and of course SEX.... Lots and lots of all the above. I can promise Xavier has definitely done it again..
What started in Blind as a foul mouthed man-whore MMA fighter and his book geek best friend has turned into something so much more by the time Savor finished. Every relationship has its tumultuous moments but in the end everyone is trying to obtain the same thing, and Logan and Maxx are no exception to this. It is only when they can get over their fears and leave the past where it belongs that they see the entire picture and get the happy ending they both desire.
First let me say that, I have to give kudos to any author that can use the much dismissed and feared 2nd person narrative (in a genre book no less) and make it work. In the first five books of Xavier Neal’s Senses series, the tale of best friends turned lovers Maxx and Logan is told in alternating sections. Using the 1st and 2nd narrative point of views by the two lead characters Neal successfully creates a story and relationship dynamic that is at times sexy, sweet and endearing. As a reader I felt very much a part of the story due to the technique that was used and I hate to keep going on about it, but I truly was/am impressed at how well it worked out. I can’t recall (outside of school textbooks, articles or blog post) having read something, particularly a narrative work that utilized 2nd POV so well. And that I found such a success in a romantica genre book is even more thrilling!
Now, after all that praise I don’t want to mislead and say the books are without flaws. There are moments for sure that will have you going eh, but nothing is perfect. I can’t even recall most of the moments that weren't perfect, because I enjoyed the story so much and found the writing smooth and easy-to-read. This is the type of romance and guilty pleasure I prefer. Something that gives me characters to root for and doesn't insult my intelligence.
Another thing to point out in the characterizations is that everyone stayed true to who they were. Even when their characters were evolving they didn't suddenly get a brain transplant and start doing things completely outside of who they were presented to be. Their struggles and doubts were believable and their conflicts and resolutions suited to the situations. Again, there were moments that weren't perfectly penned, particularly an adoption scenario comes to mind. But otherwise the overall story arc(s) were well balanced.
Xavier is one to watch. I’ve actually started her next series and although I’m not sure I’ll get through that one anytime soon, I am very impressed with what she did with this one and I know that she’ll only continue to grow as an author. If you want a touching, fun, sexy and endearing book series, that will give you a satisfying arc from start to finish, look no further than the Senses series (Books 1-5).
4.0 - characters | 4.0 - story | 4.5 for writing technique
