I finally got it. If your a bartender, someone comes up to the he bar and orders a “MILLIONAIRE COCKTAIL.” Yes , nobody has ever heard of it). However, it is right there alphabetically,. But this is an alphabetical listing of a lot of cocktails both obscure and well known so an OLD FASHIONED is proceeded by an OLD ETONIAN.and followed by an OLD PAL. There are sections for fizzes, punches, cups, etc. But that is the limit for categorical listings. So. if you want bourbon drinks, gin, etc this isn’t the place. If you want cocktails listed A,B, C. you’re home free as long as it’s from the 1930’s -No MARGARITAS or TEQUILA SUNRISES. The wine listings are old and Euro-centric. All that being said, a fun and classic book. Meanwhile, anybody up for an OLD ETONIAN?

For the information and history aspect of cocktails, you can't beat this book. Apparently the book is out of copyright and there are a number of publishers reprinting the Savoy Cocktail Book, but not all of them are good quality. The Dover edition is a full color, well done reproduction. The text is clear and the colors illustrations are vibrant. I strongly recommend that you get the Dover version.

The content of the book that I received is undoubtedly the Savoy Cocktail book. The issues I have with it though outweigh that fact. Firstly, like I have seen in some other reviews, the pages are just very poor photocopies of another copy of the actual book. Second, some of the copies were done slightly crooked and cuts of parts of the pages. Another gripe is that border around each copied page is 3/4" on the top and sides and 1" on the bottom. It looks and feels like each page is cheap printer paper. Overall I am extremely disappointed with this purchase. The only good thing is that I did not get another books pages inside the one that I received as it seems that others have had this happen to them.

What can I say about this cocktail recipe classic? If you are a fan of culinary culture or the Prohibition era, this is a must for you collection. While many recipes are old fashioned and not always what have come to be known as “standard” recipes, the combinations and names will give you interesting insight into the cocktail culture of the 1930’s. I recently picked up a copy and I’m really enjoying the author’s notes and comments throughout. Craddock has an excellent dry sense of humor. I will note that the recipes are not meant for the beginner - many are just proportions rather than actual measurements as you'd find in more modern cocktail books. As a reference for making sure you are recreating a classic recipe though, there isn't anything better. It's a piece of history and a useful reference at the same time.

I haven't used this book much but one thing I do like about it is the way they present the drink recipes. Basically, they are all in fractions of the total so you might have (for example) 1/4 ingredient #1, 1/2 ingredient #2, and 1/4 ingredient #3 so it all adds up to 1.0. So if you want four ounces in your cocktail, you know you need to have 1 ounce of #1, etc. The recipes are classic recipes but since the book was written in 1930, there are no recipes for more modern drinks such as a Mojito. Also, the drinks are all organized alphabetically regardless of the main type of spirit (gin, vodka, etc.) Overall, its a good cocktail book.

This book is described as fully illustrated, and I suppose it is, but not with a single picture/photo of an actual cocktail. It is also described as fully updated, but is really just a facsimile of the original 1930 book, with a dozen or so new recipes tacked on at the beginning. The biggest issue with this Kindle edition, however, is that it has neither an index (which means swiping back and forth through the entire book in order to find a recipe), or the option to increase the font size (which can be tiny in places) unless you zoom in on the page you are reading. This makes the Kindle edition of this book basically useless as a recipe guide.
The actual recipes are still good but, with many of them being 90 years old or more, tracking down the ingredients will not be easy as there are no updates on whether some of them are now known by a different name or are no longer available.
In summary then, this book gives a fascinating glimpse into a bygone era, but can by no possible definition be described as "fully updated" and it's conversion into Kindle format has been very poorly executed. If you want to buy a copy out of curiosity go ahead but,whatever you do, get a physical copy as the Kindle edition is useless in any practical way.

The print quality and paper quality is extremely poor. (See photo the words too little, look more like 100, with half the t missing) There are many other examples of poor printing. It's also printed in alphabetical order, making it very confusing as the Gins are mixed with Brandies etc.etc
At the end of the day it's just poorly printed text , dull and boring

There are very many recipes in the book, but they’re set out alphabetically rather than by ingredient. For me, that makes it difficult to use and it would be a far better book if, for example, all the gin/vodka based cocktails were grouped together.

I have a small collection of a few dozen books on cocktails and had been meaning to get this one for a while. I am delighted that I did so.

So far as I can tell, it is a beautifully produced facsimile of the 1930's original, with the original text and illustrations, in colour, printed on good quality paper. It also has a brief contemporary introduction with a few suggestions from the current staff at the Savoy American Bar. Frankly, I find it incredible that some other reviewers have questioned the quality of this publication.

These 1930's cocktails are very much to my taste, as they are generally short, sharp and alcoholic. These are strong drinks for a generation that had been through WW1. The author's comments are also often very funny. For more contemporary cocktail concoctions, mainly of fruit juices and fizzy drinks, it is better to look elsewhere.

Note also that as this is a facsimile, the drinks are simply in alphabetical order. You will get no assistance in terms of an ingredients index.

Not the first cocktail book for a novice, but well worth acquiring if you get a taste for these things.
