A sad and misleading joke, especially for those trying to learn the history of cocktails

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It is NOT a reproduction of the original “Savoy Cocktail Book.” Someone decided to play games by adding drinks that were not around at the time of its publication and certainly were not in the original. Some of these include the Black Russian, Moscow Mule, Pina Colada and others. Please see the photo comparing just one page from the original book to this one.

It's a great book but the pages started falling out within 48 hours. Tough to keep at the bar in that condition.

The contents of the book are fine. The publishing quality of the book is extremely poor. The hardcover edition looks like they made color copies of a very small pamplet, printed it on copy paper, and put it in a hardcover. The margins are extremely wide, the print quality is extremely poor, and the whole thing feels extremely "shabby".

This book has the right cover, but is a book about leadership on the inside. I’m so confused. Not the book I ordered at all.

Great book, however I didn't like that the image seems to just be printed on the book and the page isn't filled with it.

An amazing amour of recipes good luck learning half. P.S. pony = 1 oz/30 ml
Jigger = 1.5 oz/45 ml
Wine glass = 2 oz/60 no
Dash = 1/32 tsp/ 1ml possibly
These old measurements may require more research.

Excellent. I have a copy of the first printing that had belonged to my father-in-law. This reprint serves nicely as my “working copy.” The book itself is a bit obtuse, given it is from an era with which we have lost touch and thus takes many things about our understanding of terms and references for granted. But it is an indispensable text for any aspiring — or accomplished— mixologist.

I haven't used this book much but one thing I do like about it is the way they present the drink recipes. Basically, they are all in fractions of the total so you might have (for example) 1/4 ingredient #1, 1/2 ingredient #2, and 1/4 ingredient #3 so it all adds up to 1.0. So if you want four ounces in your cocktail, you know you need to have 1 ounce of #1, etc. The recipes are classic recipes but since the book was written in 1930, there are no recipes for more modern drinks such as a Mojito. Also, the drinks are all organized alphabetically regardless of the main type of spirit (gin, vodka, etc.) Overall, its a good cocktail book.

Essential Reading

I have a small collection of a few dozen books on cocktails and had been meaning to get this one for a while. I am delighted that I did so.
So far as I can tell, it is a beautifully produced facsimile of the 1930's original, with the original text and illustrations, in colour, printed on good quality paper. It also has a brief contemporary introduction with a few suggestions from the current staff at the Savoy American Bar. Frankly, I find it incredible that some other reviewers have questioned the quality of this publication.
These 1930's cocktails are very much to my taste, as they are generally short, sharp and alcoholic. These are strong drinks for a generation that had been through WW1. The author's comments are also often very funny. For more contemporary cocktail concoctions, mainly of fruit juices and fizzy drinks, it is better to look elsewhere.
Note also that as this is a facsimile, the drinks are simply in alphabetical order. You will get no assistance in terms of an ingredients index.
Not the first cocktail book for a novice, but well worth acquiring if you get a taste for these things.

This is perhaps a nice coffee table book owing to it's front cover
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 5, 2016Verified Purchase
This is perhaps a nice coffee table book owing to it's front cover, but offers little more. The paper is of a poor quality and pages are merely printed pictures (of text). Cocktails are listed in alphabetical order so it's difficult to read unless you know exactly what you're looking for. Claims to also offer Sours and Toddies.....there are a grand total of two of each and the sours don't use egg white. Not great

Lovely front cover but poor quality inside and recipes basic and unappealing. More of an interesting read historically than a manual for cocktails

Fantastic stylish and full of little known Cocktails. The book has a nostalgic feel and many of the Cocktails were unknown to us. We are currently working our way through them and enjoying doing so.
