Technologically Advanced, Easily Portable Water Filtration
Water for Groups
Out on backcountry excursions, during emergencies, or on overseas mission trips, the Sawyer PointOne All-in-One Water Filter System enables you to 'build your own gravity system' for a large group. Simply use the included adapter and any standard polyethelene bucket to filter up to 540 gallons of clean water per day from any fresh water source. On overseas mission trips, you can bring the PointOne filter and faucet adapter to ensure you have safe water on your trip. You can also choose to leave the filter and bucket adapter behind for families in need of clean drinking water.
U-Shaped Microtubes Trap Bacteria
The PointOne's hollow fiber membrane filters are comprised of U-shaped microtubes that allow water to enter into their core through tiny micro-pores, trapping the bacteria and protozoa on the outside. The high number of those tiny tubes and their surface area allows the filter to have one of the fastest flow rates in the world—eliminating the need to store water and reducing the possibility of water contamination after the filtration process.
0.1 Absolute Micron Protection
The Sawyer PointOne is certified at 0.1 absolute microns, meaning the filter contains no pore size larger than 0.1 micron in size. This makes it impossible for harmful bacteria, protozoa, or cysts like E. coli, Giardia, Vibrio cholerae, and Salmonella typhi (which cause Cholera and Typhoid) to pass through the filter. The filter does not remove chemicals, dissolved solids, or viruses. However, viruses are very rarely found in North America or when traveling to foreign cities.

I have relegated my pump-action filter to emergency household use and no longer carry the heavy and clunky system for camping. The Sawyer is much lighter, more reliable, more versatile, and faster to use than any pump system. I keep mine inside a small half of a plastic bottle. I use the plastic bottle to scoop water when the water source is too shallow or dripping in small amounts and then pour it into the pouch.
I recommend getting a few extra 64 ox pouches. They weigh close to nothing, take up very little room, and work great as backups and extra water carrying capacity.
The versatility of this filter is outstanding and can be configured in many ways:
1. Set up the filter on the squeeze pouch and filter the dirty water as you go instead of sitting at a water source and wasting time filtering before use. You can just fill it up and get on with your hike very quickly, especially if you keep the filter and pouches accessible. You can even hold multiple pouches of dirty water and drink them as you go, and just cap them off when not being used.
2. Use a combination of dirty and clean pouches if you wish to filter the water first and then store it clean. This also works great if you have to filter water for other people. You can attach one end to the filled dirty pouch and the other to the clean pouch. Squeeze the water through and then hand off the clean water pouch to anyone who needs it. I also like the idea of storing clean water in the pouch so there isn't any additional bacteria growth inside the pouch on warm days.
3. Use the filter in-line on a hydration bladder. Fill the bladder with dirty water and then suck the water through the hose as you drink. Only drawback I can see here is that there would be some dirty water be exposed to the inside of your pack, which may be an issue.
The only thing I can think of that this filter lacks, is a proper carbon filter for helping to remove toxins such as lead and pesticides. This is why I still use my carbon pump filter system for home and vehicle emergency use, as I will more likely encounter toxins in the water in those situations than when out in the mountains.
The only downside is that I've had a bag spring a pin-sized leak before - we went on a weeklong with a dozen boy scouts and the bag got some rough treatment from that. If you take care of it, it should last for a very long time, but if you plan on sharing it with a bunch of kids, do yourself a favor and buy a spare bag or two (Amazon sells them and they are cheap) to bring along as backup. For that matter, these kits are priced low enough that you'd be better off having one kit for every 3-4 people anyway.
One other tip: if you might be getting water from a slow stream, note that getting the water into the bag through the small opening can take some time, so it can be a little tedious. Consider bringing along an extra wide mouth water bottle (like a Nalgene) that you use to scoop up water quickly and then pour into the bag. It's not required of course, but can really help speed things along, especially if you are trying to filter water for a group of people.
