Frequently Asked Questions
Is Picaridin as Effective as DEET?
Picaridin is the perfect balance of efficacy, safety, and user-friendliness. It repels a wide variety of pests including mosquitoes, ticks, biting flies, sand flies, gnats, chiggers, and midges.
One of the longest lasting repellents available, it provides up to 14 hours of protection against mosquitoes and ticks (using the lotion; up to 12 hours for spray models), and up to 8 hours against a variety of flies, chiggers, and gnats.
Is Picaridin Safe for the Whole Family?
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends the active ingredient Icaridin (which is how Picaridin is known around the world) as the product of choice for malaria prophylaxis.*
Icaridin is recommended by the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Canadian Advisory Committee on Tropical Medicine and Travel for travelers six months to 12 years of age.**
Available as Lotion and Spray
- Lotion lasts up to 14 hours
- Comes in 2- and 4-ounce personal lotion bottles and individual lotion packets
- Also available in institutional-sized lotion pump dispensers
- Spray lasts up to 12 hours
- Available as a spray pump in 4-ounce, 3-ounce, and 0.5-ounce sizes, plus 6-ounce continuous spray
Should I Use a Lotion or Spray Repellent?
Lotions last longer than sprays. Sprays have the advantage of being able to be applied to clothing where it remains effective longer than on skin. Since repellents work as a 3 inch barrier, clothing applications can often protect 6 inches away from exposed skin, reducing your usage on skin. For optimal protection Sawyer recommends lotion on the skin and spray on the clothing.

It's biodegradable. DEET is not
Its totally non-toxic. DEET is low level toxic
Its not greasy on your skin and smells nice. Deet is greasy and stinks.
It doesn't dissolve the plastic pen in your hand or your keyboard or your glasses or your camping gear like DEET.
Why would anyone still use DEET?
This stuff to me is just like a hand lotion with a faint smell that’s not bad either. Have had it on in the “wildlife observatory blinds” and it doesn’t alert the animals. You don’t feel anything like with 100% deet.
BUT dang!!!! This stuff really works and works for a long time. No need to reapply every 5 minutes. Maybe so if ur swimming or sweating like crazy.
A little pricey but bought the big jug. Glad I did. I threw all the other stuff away, except for the stuff I spray on my boots and clothing.
I will purchase again.
But the lotion is sticky and very slow (hours) to dry. For work i like to use long paints that I treat with Permethrin. And there's the problem.
It causes long pants to cling to your legs, restricting movement. For example getting into my truck cotton pants cling to my thighs causing me to have to pull up my pant legs to bend my knees.
The bulk size makes it convenient to pack small bottles for a hike or a refresher if needed.
But the thick non drying lotion formula doesn't work for me.
IT WORKS LIKE A CHARM. Don't leave home without it!
Great scent, goes on smooth like lotion without sticky residue or that nasty bug repellent feel. I usually wind up with chiggers somewhere when we go hiking, but I didn't get any this trip! I'm going to use this stuff everywhere on our camping trips now! WORTH the buy. We also loved the pump and got smaller travel bottles to pump the product in there as it was easy to carry to re-apply if we got rained on or wet. Even so, I don't even think I had to re-apply but 1 time. It held up even through rainforest rain! (p.s. I usually get eaten alive by mosquitos. I didn't get bit once!)
